I am not sure what I want to get out of social media. I am pretty sure it is not what Instagram is, and it probably isn't this place either... back to the blog?

No matter how enshitted you think it is, social media is more popular and more influential than it's ever been. It's also now an inherently right-wing space. And telling people to "log off" cannot fix that.

This 1932 sketch of a design for a Standard Oil station by Rudolf Schindler is like a proto Ed Ruscha.

I wonder if I am to be an effective educator if I am not on any platforms? Inspiration and knowing what is current is important to my teaching, but the way platform owners are and the noise to signal ratio has me rethinking my digital footprint.

This is one of the best stories I have read in a long while.
“The marriage of big tech and Trumpworld should make clear that Silicon Valley and authoritarians share the same goal: to crush dissent by keeping their would-be opponents spinning on an endless hamster wheel of reactive anger.”

You Can’t Post Your Way Out of Fascism
Authoritarians and tech CEOs now share the same goal: to keep us locked in an eternal doomscroll instead of organizing against them, Janus Rose writes.

I spent less time on social media this week because the spring semester started. It has been a good week. Today, I dipped back in, and I regret it.

I am straightening up my basement work area. I am not sure why I didn't do this when it was a little warmer.

I know many of you are - like me - new here, so I compiled a - rather random and likely too eclectic - starter pack of accounts on Bluesky entitled Europe, Photographers, Books and Human Rights, from @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu to @paglen.studio. Or @ec.europa.eu to @thephotobookmuseum.bsky.social.

I teach a univseirty level 35mm black and white photo 1 class. The school provides the cameras. I am working on coming up with an informational card that will be on the backs of the cameras. It is a reminder about the technical stuff.

I was on Twitter longer than any other platform, but I left when the tone changed. Video centric platforms have trained me to scroll without needing to read. This platform may be the landing spot for most of my social circle, but I would rather scroll video than words.

I am too cynical to think that a new platform is going to make my life better.

Trying this place out. Not sure what i think about the platformization of the internet. I want to just fire my blog up and just do that...more to come.
