In one of the most prosperous countries in the world, a voters majority once again chose to turn right and support politics that foster hate and division. I photographed every polling station in Bernheze municipality. Many thanks to all the polling station volunteers. 📸 @martijnschmidt.bsky.social

Ondertussen in Rusland.

Last year the Forhanna Foundation acquired my work for their collection. This year they choose this work from 'New Botanica'. And they’ve pledged to keep collecting in the years ahead. A wonderful and unique commitment to support long-term projects like The Europeans. @arnoldvanbruggen.bsky.social

After an unapologetically long cycling and hiking family trip across Europe, I’m – just like all of you – back at work. Next week, from September 11–14, work from my brand-new series New Botanica will be shown for the very first time at @galeriewvl.bsky.social during the NAP+ art fair in Amsterdam.

Since leaving Meta (Instagram), I’ve been terrified to become an outsider and no one will see my work any longer:) The more reason for reviving my newsletter! I don’t send it often (3x/year), but put a lot of heart into it. Please read it here and don't forget to sign up for a next edition:

Amid plastic waste and migrant slums, we meet Jan, an infectiously passionate Dutch biologist working for Coexphal, representing most fruit and veg producers. He’s spent his life promoting biological pest control— with success. Change is possible— when the industry demands it.

What a great exhibition by Joel Meyerowitz at Fernán Gómez Centro in Madrid. For ‘My European Trip’, he and his wife Vivian travelled through Europe in ’66–’67, leaving us a historical portrait. Funded by a Guggenheim Fellowship—proof, nearly 60 years later, of the lasting value of such grants.

Thanks to a grant from the Dutch Embassy, I’ll be taking part in PHotoESPAÑA PRO Talento a bordo next week — a great opportunity to share new work created in south-east Spain with an international group of curators. The Plastic Sea will become a book and exhibition, to be launched at the end of '25.

During the EU Parliament elections @arnoldvanbruggen.bsky.social and I photographed every polling station in Den Helder. Important for future history, we believe. The SO Awards jury thought so too—they selected it as one of this year’s winners. Opening tonight 5:30 pm @melkwegamsterdam.bsky.social.

At 5 a.m. @arnoldvanbruggen.bsky.social and I are in a tomato greenhouse with manager Antonio, who picked us up an hour earlier with coffee. The day starts early for vegetable pickers, to beat the heat. Working on a new chapter for The Europeans in southeastern Spain.

The t-shirt fits into a growing trend of clothing with political slogans. Like Dior’s We Should All Be Feminists shirt and the Tax the Rich dress worn by U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at the Met Gala. And not to forget: President Trump’s Make America Great Again merchandise. Link below

Working together with @arnoldvanbruggen.bsky.social in Europe’s largest vegetable garden: the vast sea of greenhouses around Almería in southeastern Spain and makeshift settlements where - legal and illegal - migrant workers live.

There’s always that first photo on every trip. Often a rental car. Sometimes, like here, it’s the road to the first stop. The greenhouses on both sides tell we’re getting close. On the road with @arnoldvanbruggen.bsky.social for The Europeans, documenting the lives of workers in a plastic sea.
