I should probably figure out what the chemistry is around the colour change. On fresh cutting it’s brown, exposure to air causes the purple to appear. I guess isolating and characterising the non oxidised species is non trivial.

It’s a hard wood, so it should be ok. I wouldn’t dump it in my backpack with a bunch of keys, though!
