Maybe not crucial if they’re just dipping their toes in to gunpla but I regret not buying some earlier and the time they save keeps me engaged with actually building kits.

Also one more recommendation that does add some cost up front but pays off big is some single blade nippers. It’s good to have normal nippers for cutting parts off sprues but single blade nippers do 95% of the work of cleaning up nubs on parts without sanding.

The HGAC Wing Zero seems like a pretty good starting point. I also have a few of the HGAC Leos and they are very quick to build and look great.

As other people have pointed out HG kits are great for beginners as they can be pretty quick to build and are fairly cheap ($15-$25). If possible I would steer towards newer kits as Bandai has improved in detail and construction over the years (generally).
