Also a few silly design notes on Captain Freedom:
- His symbol changed the second strip onwards because I didn't like how US flag looked on his chest and wanted to simplify it.
-His belt buckle is a reference to a certain scene from the film "American Pie" that was a well known pop culture ref then.

The thing I find terrifying re: Captain Freedom as a character, incidentally, is that when I drew all these he was a Canadian teen's hyperbolic satire of what he saw of US Republicans in the news in the early 2000s.

I NEVER expected this to look like I was SOFTBALLING relative to current reality.

I drew a few more of these, but let's end tonight with the third one, featuring the introduction of two more "this was clearly drawn in 2003" characters -Dubya the Boy Blunder and the Grey Pilgrim.

The second comic introduced fellow "superhero" The Capitalist, aka "Fatman". Another character I've used as as recently as a couple years ago.

For context, this was the era when anti-movie piracy ads were playing in theatres, and this was lampooning a specific one.

Fun fact, this predates Midori getting her real name by a few years. Given originally she was just known as "Doe-tan". She only got an IRL name when I started fleshing her out more/using her as a character and not a background extra.

I do in fact have more cosplay art of them somewhere but I need to dig around. I did a whole ton of "Lugnut-tans cosplaying as toys I was reviewing for YouTube videos" art back in the day and I know I have stuff here and there., just not all in my main art folder it seems

oh and it's NOT EVEN the first time Shiels and Nite have cosplayed as TFcon exclusives!

I drew that back in 2011 to use for YouTube video bumpers in my TFcon 2011 videos. And then doodled drunk variant art for funsies.

And yeah Bsky is ABSOLUTELY flagging these because of Nite's outfit

And here's a 2015 sketch of Shiels cosplaying G1 Megatron, complete with hair dye/a wig.

At this point Nite had taken a backseat character conceptwise in that she was in conceptual background but I hadn't done anything with her for years at this point
March 26, 2024 at 4:40 PM
Fun fact: this is HARDLY the first time I've drawn Shiels and Nite cosplaying as Transformers characters (that aren't Lugnut), nor will it be the last.

Earliest instance is in fact, in 2010, when I drew them dressed as Classics and Henkei Megatron.

THIS is the one that really cemented these characters for me though, I think, and made me go "I want to do more with these characters; in fact I should do designs for ALL the Lugnut toys that have been made to date."

(Which I then continued on to do)

I then continued with a few more doodles.

And did a proper redraw of the design with a different pose and still palette swapping.

Most recent art I have of Tash that I can find is from 2015, and even then it's an AU version of her for BT Toons continuity that never actually got used anywhere.

Was trying to redesign her are a trendier high schooler while keeping elements of her classic outfit intact.
March 9, 2024 at 1:03 AM
Tash with her hair down, from 2008. Was very explicitly giving her a more armored outfit here for story reasons.

Honestly she's a character near and dear to me and I'm kinda sad I've not used her in anything in YEARS, considering how much I love her character and her overall arc I plotted out.
March 9, 2024 at 1:01 AM
Tash's character design has actually not changed massively from the fundamentals as I've always loved her design.

By 2004 this is how I was drawing her. Simplified, but she gained a flight jacket at this point. (I KNOW I have a bunch of paper sketches in my archives of her with the jacket).

Nate as he appeared by 2005, in low poly Warcraft III model form. He is fully rigged.

Pretty much the ONLY constant between the two images was his name and the bandana. He got a HEAVY design revamp when I decided to use him again in high school, complete with being aged down. This is that version.

And here's her modern design from 2019, around when I was settling on her aesthetic. All the key elements fairly settled aside from how I draw my cat characters (which as established changed in 2023).

By this point she'd been moved over to a non-BT Toons story universe instead.
