So far, the biggest psychological hurdle for me in terms of daily driving Linux is that it feels incredibly fragile. I feel like I’m one unwitting mistake from losing my install and all my data.

Apple’s exec crisis (and all their other crises) are seriously concerning.
What happened that no one sees a future in Apple anymore?

Tinkering with Arch (btw) has been an interesting experience. It’s made me reframe thinking of a computer as a monolith with properties into a container with many parts.

Less like a pocket knife and more like a pocket full of independent tools.

Crucial is shutting down — because Micron wants to sell its RAM and SSDs to AI companies instead. It’s already getting hard to build an affordable PC, and the exit of the longstanding provider of consumer memory is going to make that even more challenging www.theverge.com/news/837594/...

Copped a used ThinkPad T14 for $220 as my upcoming Linux desktop lab. I have plenty of Linux experience in a server context, but needed a dedicated machine to get more acquainted with desktop distros.

Now to figure out which to start with…

It's things like this. This is why steam is a de-facto monopoly. Because they don't do things Tim Sweeney thinks are a good idea.

What are you all seeing in Linux gaming that I'm not?
I absolutely despise Windows with every fiber of my being.
But trying to hit high performance targets on games, even on Bazzite, feels like an exercise in futility.

Buying vintage tech is one of my favorite things. I love giving machines a new life. Got a refurbished iPod Classic 7th gen I’ve got big plans for.

Bought my wife an M4 MacBook Air last week and am seriously impressed by its performance. She gets a relatively stable 60FPS on FFXIV with moderate settings, even thermal throttled.

What makes Bluesky different: it’s open source, so anyone can contribute to building the experience they want. And even if you build a whole new app, the protocol means you can migrate with your data, identity, and relationships intact.

The eternally-great thing about open source: if something doesn't exist, and the devs don't have time to work on it themselves, you can just implement it for them!

If they decide not to take it as-is, you've still helped explore the design space.

And if they don't accept it, but you need it, fork!

Figured out enough of the rsky-relay internals to implement this myself (reporting the data that it currently records):
