Anyway, LAST CRUSADE works on a lot of levels—1930s pulp, neo-medievalism, a defense against fascism, a story of a father and son trying to understand each other. It plays differently once you know Stoppard fled the Nazis as a kid, or once you see THE FABELMENS.

Stoppard is someone whose work was influencing my ideas on good writing long before I knew who he was, thanks to his screenplays for Last Crusade and Brazil, so that when I was a teenager and college student and discovering theater, devouring his plays just seemed natural.

The combination of Spielberg’s direction, Stoppard’s writing, and a really engaged Ford and Connery makes for real screen magic.
There’s a reason we started the Hollywood Avalon series with that movie.
