I think about that stuff a lot.
As a grown man with an action figure collection, I’m ashamed I never put together: Clark Kent, Climate Refugee
Superman is a refugee from a planet where they ignored scientists warning them about catastrophic environmental changes so of COURSE the right has decided to hate him.

No matter how much press this receives, it will deserve more
Joey Chestnut, the longtime champion of the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest who was barred from competing last year over an endorsement deal with a vegan-meat company, returned on Friday. He devoured 70.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes to notch his 17th win. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/04/n...

If you have ever told someone “we aren’t a democracy, we’re a republic” I am wholly uninterested in any additional analysis you can provide.

Pete Hegseth: ‘There Are No State Secrets In A Healthy Relationship’
WASHINGTON—Staunchly defending his decision to share sensitive military data in messages to his wife, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told reporters Monday, “There are no state secrets in a healthy relationship.” “Communication is key in every strong marriage, and that includes communication about airstrikes on foreign adversaries,” said the Pentagon chief, who called the mere idea […]

The whole point of social security is that people shouldn't have to live and die in abject poverty.

Is it perfect? Of course not. I'd prefer it was more generous. But it is better than nothing and speaks to our (often aspirational) values.

Listen to God everybody
If you’re struggling today, as I am, just know this:

YOU HAVE NOT FAILED.

It’s the world that has failed.

Keep calm and bugger on.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

I recently had my student read through the 2023–2024 Pew Religious Landscape Study. My students’ prompt was pretty easy– they just had to find a couple interesting statistics and do a write-up. As I prepared for class, and did my own skimming, I unsurprisingly gravitated towards information on us Mormons. Eventually, I got sucked in and did a “control/f” search of the 393 page document looking over every mention of us.
