I'm not sure why an Afghan cares about the people ordered to do an inside baseball US domestic politics thing. He's in DC... if he's mad that the US fought the Taliban or or mad that they didn't fight the Taliban hard enough, there are actual foreign service employees and politicians everywhere.

What none of these people get is that fair is impossible and every meritocracy is born dying. The higher the stakes and the harsher the penalties for failure, the less time it has to live.

The gospel of the academic job market is part of a larger stream of 'liberal' thought based on the idea that war to the knife meritocracy is fine, actually, as long as it's fair.
