I'm not saying life is too easy, and it's super privileged to even have the option of comfort.

But I think weirdness gets conflated with danger in a way that leads to violence and criminalization, and it feels like part of that stems from a refusal to experience anything harmless but uncomfortable

One thing I've been learning is that you minimize discomfort by practicing. Practice running hard at the end of workouts. Practice periods of focus amid distractions. Practice exposure to harmless weird people on the bus.

I've been thinking about discomfort a lot lately, and to be sure there's far too much of it in the world, but for many affluent and otherwise privileged folks, we've lost the ability to sit with discomfort, and that often manifests as anxiety, which can be expressed as xenophobia.

Within a few blocks of Ellice saw four police officers standing by bus stops and four transit enforcement officers. Some $500k plus in annual salaries. Watched them turn away someone over a $3 fare.
Noticed it’s gameday for Jets.

Maybe things are a bit better now, but my elementary/high school education was purely pre-contact and sanitized colonial history, plus the occasional discussion of current affairs, but almost zero consideration of how we got from there to here. They were completely separate topics.

It's hardly the most egregious part of the story, but it seems relevant that the IIU report doesn't name the vehicle model. It's likely that the shift to SUVs has both reduced visibility and encouraged cops to drive off road. Even if they didn't break any laws, this death was far from inevitable.
