Perhaps instead of Columbus Day we can celebrate Columbian Exchange Day where we celebrate the food pairings that had never been possible before, peppers and onions, chocolate and coffee, basil and tomatoes.

Cynicism is the mind killer
Sort of amazing that the comic strip artist who was clever and funny enough to publish this has now become… Dick from the Internet.
It's Economics Nobel Prize Day, and hence your annual reminder not to be That Guy.

Working papers get a lot of attention and journalists don't scrutinize the evidence. I do that here for the most recent cash transfers and infant mortality paper...

Is the effect that big?
How can spillovers be so important (and work so fast)?
Do forking paths affect the findings?
And more...

Wait, I thought it wasn't corruption when it was done in the open, officially.
REPORTER: On the president's dinner tonight, will the White House commit to making a list of the attendees public so people can see who's paying for that kind of access to the president?

LEAVITT: The president is attending it in his personal time

I don't think it's true that no one is thinking about the agentic arms race, but I also don't think it gets enough attention. Who is winning and losing in short term? How durable are those gaps? What is the cost of arms race before a new paradigm sets in?

I have to admit, when Trump dubbed Rubio "Little Marco" he picked the right adjective. No Secretary of State has ever come up littler

I learned from Roodman that Benjamin Franklin set up the first US MFIs. TIL he also set up the first American CDFI:
"Franklin...championed the hospital...as an instrument of economic development...and local employment..becom[ing] 1 of the city's most important sources of credit...loaning 35000lbs"

Lots of coverage about Tesla shares tanking because customers don’t want to be associated with a fascist etc.
But what if the problem is that it’s a poorly run company whose CEO is absentee, whose most iconic product is falling apart, & that now seems to have misplaced $1.4B

So long as democracy exists, even in its very imperfect form, totalitarianism is in deadly danger. orwell.substack.com/p/so-long-as...

A good use of large donors’ money right now would be to make zero-interest loans to orgs so they can continue programs. Once USG makes its back payments, loans can be repaid.

This is such an important point: Even the USAID projects that have waivers to continue because they were classified as life-saving are paralyzed. The block on Treasury payments means the orgs running those programs don't have the cash flow to continue them.
Two weeks into President Trump’s sweeping freeze on foreign aid, HIV groups abroad have not received any funding, jeopardizing the health of more than 20 million people, including 500,000 children.
