Hey everyone, thanks for all the follows. Still figuring this thing out. Reminds me a lot of Twitter back in the day. Let's hope Bluesky is not discovered by all the bots, trolls, and Elon Musks.
My home country is no longer a democracy (to the extent it ever really was). It's impossible to fight back against fascism using the old rules and procedures. They don't apply anymore. Not sure when people will realize this.

I am so deeply uninterested in AI. Just think of all the 🤩 stories that aren't being covered by journalists, the worthy projects that aren't being funded, the institutional challenges that aren't being addressed by uni administrators — bc their 👀 are all focused on this dumb product nobody asked for
Another hour, another call for another conference about teaching with AI. I am so supremely annoyed and bored and 💔 by this reactionary obsession: what a waste of opportunity to think about infinitely more constructive, convivial, empowering, life-affirming and existentially consequential things

Someone better remind AI what snitches get.

Super happy and proud to report that my student, Connie Yu, has won the student paper competition at the @hazcenter.bsky.social at the University of Colorado! She’s the 4th @mountroyalu.bsky.social student to win it in 14 years— an impressive run for MRU disaster students! Congrats, Connie!
Congrats to the winners of the 2025 Student Paper Competition! These students impressed the judges with their originality, writing quality, and knowledge. We're so excited to welcome them to the Natural Hazards Workshop this summer: bit.ly/3YyaPxx

Corporate leaders are obsessing over GDP per capita.
But, if you look at just about any number that would meaningfully tell you how well our economy is doing, Canada does better than the U.S.

TL;DR: The @ucalgary.bsky.social admins fell over themselves to make up rules & to arbitrarily apply others. They were willing to violate students' right to assembly & expression *for the sole reason that they didn't agree with the students' position*.

My dear friend's kid is among this group of youth who have sued the state of Virginia for violating their right to a safe climate through their policies promoting fossil fuel use. Their case has made it to the state Supreme Court!! 💪 🌎

I stopped by the liquor store to say farewell to the massive selection of Kentucky bourbon on the shelves.
We are the number one export market for Kentucky spirits. On Tuesday, all American booze is being pulled off the shelves.
We will drink Canadian whiskey.
True. North. Strong. Free of bourbon.

I have to fly to the US for a work trip, and this makes me nervous. When you introduce chaos into the fed. gov’t, you get chaos on the ground. Has nothing to do with DEI, and everything to do with sudden layoffs, staffing changes, budget cuts, & endemic uncertainty.

I mean this when I say Elon is the most dangerous man in the world. Truly supervillain level of danger.
So Musk is using a “budget cutting” committee as a front to gain access to classified information to gain a competitive advantage over his competitors, while the CCP is also one of his most important business partners. Worth every penny of that PAC money.

Of course. University administrators are not "bold" (despite what the hiring advertisements say they should be). They are mostly weak-kneed, smarmy, yes-men/women/people. They'll ingratiate themselves to whatever right-wing anti-intellectual politician is in power in order to keep their jobs.
#ICYMI Opinion | In 2016, many university administrators publicly reassured students and community members who feared marginalization and persecution by the incoming Trump administration.

Have you noticed that when the fascists escape to platforms like Gab, nobody follows them there? But when we all come here the nazis try to crash the party?
