More 2025 birding highlights:
Ahead of my visit to Seattle mid-year, my son did some research on good spots to find owls. So, within hours of landing, we were at Ravenna Park. Friendly locals directed us to a family of barred owls and we spent several hours enjoying their antics.

At this time of year, I like to look forward in the hope that things might improve.
When 2020 ended, I hoped that 2021 would be better. As it happened, it was worse ... and just kept getting worse.
Each new year turned to the old year and said, "Hold my beer."
So, I feel a sense of dread.

The back alleys of Sydney’s Darlinghurst are quiet before dawn on New Year’s Eve, but there are expected to be 1M revellers later today gathered around the harbour for a few minutes of flammable delights.

A sooty oystercatcher at Bald Hill Beach.
These aren't regulars at BHB. Pied oystercatchers are resident there and almost always seen. I did notice that the pied oystercatchers chased this one away 😄

When I took this (terrible) pic at some distance at Bald Hill Beach, I thought it was an eastern curlew doing a fly-by. But it turned out to be a whimbrel. I think this is the first time I've seen one in SA. Very pleased to see this uncommon bird. Proving that you just never know what might show up.

A good illustration of the difference in size of these two migratory shorebirds.

Really nice to see a group of 6 greater sand plovers at Bald Hill Beach on Sunday. Not a brilliant photo as we didn't want to get too close and scare them away. Rare in South Australia - I've only seen them a couple of times before. They were hard to see amongst the stints and curlew sandpipers.
