Exploring historic Detroit Tiger seasons celebrating a milestone anniversary. In 2025, we'll be recreating the 90th anniversary of Detroit's first World Series championship in 1935
Hugh Shelly spent spring training with the #Tigers in 1936 and was sent to Toledo. Shelly never again played in the major leagues but played in the minors through the 1946 season. After leaving baseball, Shelly worked in a hardware store for 32 years in Beaumont.

Hugh Shelly, a 25 year old Texan with great speed and defensive skills, was called up from Beaumont on June 25. He spent the rest of the season with the #Tigers, mainly on the bench. Shelly appeared in 7 games, 5 times in the outfield and twice as a PH.

Pete Fox played five more years with the #Tigers after the championship of 1935, but never again had as good of a season. Fox was purchased by the Red Sox after the 1940 season and spent five years in Boston during WWII.

Pete Fox, a 26 year old outfielder from Evansville, IN, enjoyed the finest season of his career in 1935. Fox started the season with sore arm that limited his playing time. There was talk of a trade with the Washington Senators involving Fox.

Hub Walker played in Cincinnati for two seasons (36-37) in a part-time role. He bounced around the minors until he enlisted in the Army in 1943. Walker received a medical discharge in 1945 and caught on with the #Tigers late in the year and appeared in a couple 1945 World Series games.

Harvey "Hub" Walker, a 29 year old from Mississippi and the older brother of Gee Walker, started the 1935 season in Toledo and hit over .300 for the two months of the season.

Gee Walker had his best seasons in 1936 and 1937, hitting .353 and .335 with double-digit HR totals. He became very popular with the fans in Detroit. So when he was traded to the White Sox in December 1937, howls of protest came from all over Detroit.

Gee Walker, a 27 year old outfielder from Mississippi in his fourth season with the #Tigers, started 44 games in centerfield. After a winter full of trade talks, Walker had a successful season in a reserve role in 1935. He hit .301 with 7 HRs and 56 RBIs.

Jo-Jo White played three more seasons for the #Tigers. But with the #Tigers picking up veteran outfielders in '36 and '37, Jo-Jo's playing time decreased. After the 1938 season, White was traded by the #Tigers to Seattle of the Pacific Coast League.

Jo-Jo White started 95 games in CF for the #Tigers in 1935. A 26 year old from Georgia with the #Tigers had a poor season offensively. White hit .240 with 2 HRs and 33 RBIs. He drew 68 walks and stole 19 bases while scoring 88 runs. White started the first 5 games of the World Series, hitting .263

Chet Morgan had one more stint with the #Tigers, hitting .284 in 73 games in 1938. But Morgan played a total of 17 years in organized ball, playing through the 1948. Morgan managed briefly in the minors, but moved to Pasadena, TX where he worked for several years in the water department.

Chet Morgan, a 25 year old rookie from Mississippi, was a minor league batting champion in the Texas League in 1934. Mickey Cocharne was impressed with Morgan's speed and kept him on the team when they came north in the spring.

Goose Goslin played for two more seasons in Detroit. He led the team with 26 HRs in 1936, but his playing time slipped in 1937. He was released by the #Tigers on October 3, 1937. Goslin signed on with his old team, the Washington Senators. Goslin was let go after hitting .158 in 38 games.

Flea Clifton, a 26 year old infielder from Cinncinati, played 43 games in a utility role for the World Champion #Tigers. He started 19 games at third base when Marv Owen was injured. He also started 3 games at second base and 2 at shortstop.

Marv Owen played two more seasons with the #Tigers. He was traded to the White Sox after the 1937 season. He played two seasons in Chicago, with his role diminishing during the second. His final season in the majors was in 1939 with the Red Sox.

After finishing ninth in the AL MVP voting in 1934, Marv Owen, a 29 year old third baseman from San Jose, CA, slumped in 1935. Despite his batting average dropping 50 points to .263, Owen started 129 games at third base. He was out for a couple weeks in June with a leg injury.

Billy Rogell played four more seasons with the #Tigers, but injuries affected his arm strength and his playing time. After the 1939 season, Rogell was traded to the Cubs. The veterans on his new team resented Rogell for being a part of the team that beat them in the 1935 World Series.

Billy Rogell, a 30 year old from Illinois who played his sixth season with the #Tigers, started 150 games at shortstop in 1935. Rogell had his lowest batting average in four years (.275) and hit 6 HRs with 74 RBIs.

Schuble's last season in organized ball was 1936, playing the Rochester and Houston along with two games for the Cardinals. After baseball, he worked in the Exxon refinery in Houston. Schuble died in 1990 at the age of 83.

Heinie Schuble, a 28 year old infielder from Houston, played in 9 games for the #Tigers in 1935. He was also an unofficial coach. In addition to pinch hitting, Schuble played two games at third base and one at second base. He had two singles in 8 at bats. He did not appear in the World Series.

Gehringer played with the #Tigers until the 1942 season, his 19th with the team. After that season, he enlisted in the Navy and served until 1945. Gehringer had a successful auto parts business after his retirement from baseball.

Charlie Gehringer, a 32 year old second baseman from Fowlerville, MI, enjoyed one of his best seasons in 1935. Having finished his 12th season with the #Tigers, "The Mechanical Man" is widely considered among the best second baseman of all time.

Hank Greenberg played 13 seasons for the #Tigers and had one of the most storied careers in team history despite missing four seasons due to military service during World War II. Greenberg led the American League in HRs 4 times, including his first full season after the war in 1946.

For the second straight season, a player forthe #Tigers was named the American League Most Valuable Player. Last year's MVP was manager/catcher Mickey Cochrane. In 1935, the honor went to Detroit first baseman, Hank Greenberg.
