Vaccinations are a goddamn miracle.
Terrific news in Sweden... Massive decreases in HPV-16 & 18 due to HPV vaccination.

There was a 98%/99% decline in HPV-16/HPV-18 prevalence among 2000-born vs. (unvaxxed) 1984-born cohort.

Declines larger than the vax coverage, suggesting herd immunity operating.

1/x My NIH grant that would collect data to help *prevent suicidal thoughts and behaviors* among LGBTQ+ people was terminated today, along with many other LGBTQ+ focused grants. These terminations make no sense scientifically. Here's why:

Dr McNealy is an incredible scientist doing incredible work on neural effects of hormonal contraceptives - give her a follow!
Welcoming myself to Blue Sky with a bang -- I am excited to announce that I successfully defended my dissertation yesterday. What a great culmination to nearly six years at UNL working with @rbevins.bsky.social!

Amen, and also true of sex research. Both fields act as if the goal is to overcome the glittering allure of pleasure to prevent (real, important) risks, without deeply understanding & honoring those pleasures.

I feel ethically + professionally obligated as a clinical psychologist (and hope my peer feel the same) to state that sexual or gender diversity is empirically and definitively 1) not mental illness 2) is not treated as mental illness in any ethical and reputable treatment and 1/2
Meta literally created a LGBTQ exception for calling someone mentally ill as an insult. You can't do it for any other group except LGBTQ people.

Wonderful news for reproductive health. Even if infusions were only as good as oral tabs, this would be good: oral iron causes nausea (already a prob in pregnancy) and one-time infusions are much easier to roll out & track than daily pill use. So infusions having *better* outcomes? 🤩

Want to halve your risk of death before age 75? 🚴🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️
17-year-long Scottish study of 82,000+ adults finds commuting by bike reduces your risk of:
• early death
• hospitalisation for any reason
• cardiovascular disease
• cancer mortality
• treatment for mental health problems.

Yeah, but those LTNs and bike lanes are *really* annoying.

Working on my syllabus for upper division human sexuality course next semester - Need recs for articles on gender/sexual minority health equity. Trick is this course is super-cross listed (eg psych, sociology, youth & family studies) so can’t assume shared background. #lgbtq #queer #healthpsych

Dr Malik puts to words a feeling I’ve had a while: “just say no!” is demeaning, terrible advice for academia. Would be better to teach our junior colleagues to ask for help, compensation, and equitable distribution of common goods labor such as mentoring.
But please dont share this as a mantra for success. If your success comes at the direct expense of your colleagues because they are doing all the work everyone is supposed to share in, it does not make you ‘successful’ it just makes you a horrible colleague.

Rant over. For now
