Stupid hills I will die on part 3,826: using "Victorian" as a descriptor of 19th century people located in vaguely "the West" outside of the UK and parts of its overseas empire is ahistorical and is a small part of making bad, dumb cultural norms seem far more popular in their time than they were.

New experience: a couple folks on @chicagocta.bsky.social asked to take a photo of a book I was reading — a copy of @garethdennis.uk's How the Railways Will Fix the Future borrowed via inter-library loan. They were, of course, both civil engineers. Shout out to workers at @ilcwuafscme.bsky.social

Watching @wtyppod.bsky.social's NYC show after not making 3 shows I had tickets for. I see @wtyppod.com shouting, "Go Cubs!" just to dunk on New Yorkers. As someone raised on the south side of Chicago who now lives perilously close to drunk Cubs fans, I see your hard sacrifice and salute you for it.

Watching @wtyppod.bsky.social's NYC show after not making 3 shows I had tickets for. I see @wtyppod.com shouting, "Go Cubs!" just to dunk on New Yorkers. As someone raised on the south side of Chicago who now lives perilously close to drunk Cubs fans, I see your hard sacrifice and salute you for it.

Per reporter inside who was told he can't use his phone, at least three people have been detained by ICE this morning after their hearings; two men and one woman.
Two black SUVs with plainclothes agents inside have arrived, presumably for transport.

My father recently finished @margaret.bsky.social's The Sapling Cage. We sent him a copy since he enjoyed her previous books. His review: "Yeah, it was good, but nothing will ever match Tolkien for me when it comes to fantasy." I told him that I suspect the author would endorse this assessment.
