A charming essay by the former chair of Africana studies at Bowdoin College about the New York Times crafting elitist propaganda.
Maybe Don’t Talk to the New York Times About Zohran Mamdani
It’s remarkable, the people you’ll hear from. Teach for even a little while at an expensive institution—the term they tend to prefer is “elite”—and odds are that eventually someone who was a studen…

Gisteren hield de coalitie Samen Tegen Fascisme een energieke manifestatie met ruim vierhonderd anti-fascisten bij het Dokwerker-standbeeld op het Jonas Daniël Meijerplein in Amsterdam. Dat was een te...

I'm an "A.i." abolitionist.

No consumer-facing LLMs or generative "A.i." in anything.

Sure, machine learning in science and a few other limited applications is fine.

But consumer-facing LLMs and generative "A.i." that are based on theft, push disinfo, and can be manipulated by billionaires?

No.

I feel this very deeply. But I think we are getting there.
If *sociology* were (as its name suggests) the science of associations rather than the science of the social to which it was reduced in the nineteenth century, then perhaps we would be happy to call ourselves "sociologists."

The goal is plainly and literally to cut the number of people involved in basic science in the US by 70%
From over 300k to less than 100k. A picture of smaller, reduced science.

I think there are positive aspects to metascience (its quant methods are more interesting than classic scientometrics) but you could see this coming from a mile away indeed.
Of course the whole point of "metascience" was to do super basic sociology of science, but remove any attention to politics or ideology. This is an unfortunate but not unpredictable outcome of that. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...
