Always great when I get to call a student I knew as an eighth-grader a new colleague in my building 👏🏻

Sometimes you need to wrap up a book club with one more thing: Lego sculptures.

Themes, text panels, #makewriting, discussion, gallery walk and @legoeducation.bsky.social

Good times!

Today we hosted a guest speaker who once attended our high school, Mike Beck, who spoke about his high school experiences and the skills that students will need beyond graduation. Such a gift when community members volunteer their time like this to share their wisdom 👏🏻 Thank you Mike!

This week I got to see Blackwater Pond, the one Mary Oliver loved and wrote about often. No joke, a friendly fox watched us the whole time and it made me want to write poetry 🦊

Some #APLit projects, reading and interpreting “Very Old Texts” and presenting reading and research to each other science fair style.

I love seeing the variety of books they selected!

When we study Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, it’s always a pleasant counterweight to design our own thoughtful extended, metaphors around roads and then reflect on the process.

It reinforces the skills of reading for figurative meaning, but from a different angle.

Quick, easy, positive, and skill-based.

1. After a spell of reading, write one sentence about what you love about reading. (First two pics)

2. Apply a recent skill (semicolon + conjunctive adverb in this case) to modify one of the sentences, punctuating it perfectly. (Last two pics)

For “Dress Like A Teacher Day” these two aspiring English teachers went literary…and maybe poked some fun at my nerdy Tshirt collection 😂

When you’re explaining directions for an assignment, and you turn around to find a student has started building a fortress out of saltines 😱😂

Since the release of Artful AI, I've been able to talk publicly on several podcasts about the book, its inspiration, content, impact, and goals.

Here is the complete list of podcast episodes on this topic so far . . . and I'll add to it as time goes on!

Second block today was “Stall Day” when students could stall the start of class by brining donations in coins for Mini Thon. Took me 20 minutes 😁👏🏻

Can you guess what we are reading I. #APLit right now based on the word cloud?

So we are reading The Road right now in Gr10 and learning about mood.

I have some outdoor writing time planned.

I gathered these seed pods for mallow and milkweed.

Like the novel, they look gray and spent, but contain kernels of hope 🌱

Tomorrow we plant seeds in the wild space by our school.

I think it takes more than one thing. More in class writing work, more process evidence, more honest talk about why we write, what AI threatens…and honest talk about when and how AI can push our writing instead of replacing it.

I’m working on and writing about all of this in a HS setting.

I’m kind of proud of my Friday English teacher outfit today…just as we finish The Old Man and the Sea in #APLit 🤩

Always a favorite activity. The title seems simple…until we start mapping the connotations of each word, unlocking meaning and anticipation.

To end the week, we had conversation an about what “analysis” means, understanding the pieces and the whole.

We studied a partner’s Lego build closely, broke it down, put it together again piece by piece.

“We’re going to do this with texts all semester…this is our metaphor!”

Poem of the Day:

An opening build + writing activity to open our year!

10 min: free build

10 min: write in one of these genres with a one-page goal in writers notebooks (direction slide included)

Then share your build/writing with seat partners.

On the eve of my first day back to school, I’m remembering the many reflections of #ISTELive and #ASCDAnnual in San Antonio this summer. I’m grateful I got to go!
