Another possibility that the Ahsoka series really opened up was the possible existence of galaxies and societies beyond the main Star Wars galaxy.
In the absence of a structured Empire or Republic, a new military or consortium from another galaxy could pose as a challenge.

I’ll go even further to say it makes perfect sense because he practically looked dead into the camera and announced that he’s so powerful he can cheat death. Also, his entire MO is being 12 steps ahead of everybody and having backup plans for his backup plans.
Hot take: Palpatine returning with a fleet of planet-killing Star Destroyers makes sense when you remember he’s an EXTREMELY petty man who can’t cope with the fact that he lost at Endor.

It always worked for me in TROS because, much like how he already worked in the Clone Wars, Palpatine was willing to manipulate various sides of a war and was open to any contingency to win in the end.
But what he thought would be an easy takeover ended with the galaxy uniting to take him down.

I really like what they did in the High Republic, they made a genuine threat to the Jedi and the galaxy and it wasn't a giant super weapon nor was it another dark spider/Sith.
I'd love to see them further explore the Underworld, pirates (especially with all the governments taken out currently), etc
