The forest was kind today & had I checked my @oldfarmersalmanac.bsky.social I would have been less surprised seeing plantain, dandelion, raspberry, wild chives, wood sorrel, alpine strawberry, stinging nettles...all sprouting like spring.

@janenodough.bsky.social 🫶 This one's for you - re: kitchen fails...

Every year I try and use my Granny Nova Jean's cookie cutters - imagining how glorious her cookies looked... and well baking genes are recessive in me.

Christmas cookies 2015 and yesterday.
Less fail, but still wrong :D

I've lived in many "blue" and "red" states which is why I continue to appeal not promoting the false narritive that "blue" states are woke and "red" states are dumb hillbillies. Good and bad live everywhere and you don't find what you don't look for.

So let's check on a "red" state...

I just... I just can't with all the loud people thinking farm subsidies just started now(and the 100s of people agreeing with them).
Just because you just learned about a thing doesn't mean it just began.

Precision ag, drought, flooding etc have been subsidized since The New Deal.

This type of lentils has been cultivated for almost 2,000 years in the Canary Islands. The indigenous population was almost decimated when Europeans took over the islands but settlers (and the people they trafficked) adopted the indigenous people’s crops and continued to grow them.

I may not say when I harvest native horsetail from the river-bottoms...

(that I buy from Poland as a tea because 'mericans are obsessed with "native" plants but don't know fuck about them so I still have to get my horsetail tea from clear Polish people)

...but there will be signs.

I remember what my father said after 9/11 - "send us they already broke and don't break more young boys."... and that was before he tried to die and then eventually succeeded in 2006. Happy Veterans Day.

🥳 HUGE win! Cuba just made history by formalizing #agroecology as national law (Decree No. 128). And this isn't a top-down reform, but the institutionalization of a powerful, people-led movement that's been growing for over 30 years. Farmers leading policy! #agsky

My grandmas didn't cook every meal 'cause they were rich-they were poor. My mom & I didn't live in 5 states before being taken in because we were rich-we were poor. I don't cook every meal because I'm rich. I'm happy for those that live in houses & can eat what they want-but that ain't all of us.

The hardest part about my degrees, botany credits, ethnobotanist training & years of farming is "master gardeners" wanting to lecture me about perennials & zone systems.. because gforbid self seeding annuals and actual climate change are in the mix. Just like people who can't cook without recipes.
