That sounds like hell on Earth. I went basically nocturnal for my final semester at university (I only had two hours of tuition and one professor meeting per week, the rest was cranking on my final year project) and apart from insane final week crunch, I still needed about eight hours of sleep.

I don’t believe in the Great Man theory: whatever he did, if it hadn’t been him, it would have been someone very like him — but perhaps with opinions that were slightly less bad. Through a process of (metaphorical) elimination, we can hope to get leaders who suck less in each generation.

I have laboured in the compliance mines for two decades now, and I have lost count of the number of times I have had conversations like this:
THEM: we’re doing X for compliance with Y
ME: but Y doesn’t require you to do that
THEM: yes, but out of an abundance of caution, since everyone is doing it…

It’s worse than that, it’s performative. Writing only in lower-case is *hard*: tools will fight you. Same with a lot of basic grammar and orthography. Some of them write like illiterates even autocorrect couldn’t rescue, but others like Altman are making a point of it.

And just to forestall the “but everyone else just learns English” thing, my kids are all at school in Italy, and everyone learns English plus at least one other language.

The difference between plurals and the Saxon genitive would be a good start!
