Why does Ford's brand of fiscal management almost always involve the police? #onpoli

This is how every contract is award in Ontario - donate to Ford, and you'll be promised a contract, years before the project even enters the RFP process.

A lot of interesting data out from @pollara.bsky.social in their annual Trust in Media Report. But I suspect this one is the headline-maker politically: Despite a multi-year campaign against the CBC by Conservatives, the public broadcaster remains the most trusted news desk by Canadians.

I don't have a lot of answers so I'll close with Snyder's advice. Do something, ANYTHING you can, to fight the normalization of fascism and help keep resistance alive. And that goes for people outside of America. History shows us fascism doesn't have much respect for borders.
July 6, 2025 at 11:57 AM
Of course, if business will not stand up to fascism, consumers still have the power to stop it in its tracks by boycotting businesses who embrace it and making clear the intention to do so before this reordering of the economy even takes place.

Snyder argues CEOs must come out in against this form of "labour" now. But based on how American business leaders have backed Trump and his agenda so far, I suspect they will follow their Nazi era counterparts who never really faced punishment for collaborating.
July 6, 2025 at 11:57 AM
Of course, the US Constitution under the 13th Amendment already allows for legalized slavery when a "crime" has been committed. It's how slavery moved from the fields to prisons.
July 6, 2025 at 11:57 AM
To Snyder, the most likely scenario is that undocumented people are captured, imprisoned, and have their labour given back to the companies they had worked for "for free."

Ford won't even face the people's representatives in the Legislature as his party passes legislation to make Ontario a lawless state ripe for pillaging by big business.
June 4, 2025 at 8:54 PM
Really totalitarian behaviour from Doug Ford to suspend oversight in the legislature on a bill that would suspend all laws wherever he pleases across Ontario.

Wonderful to be back in my once-adopted city of Ottawa for the Speech from the Throne. Stopped by this important reminder of the power of peacekeeping.

Even the Toronto Zoo, which does not typically weigh-in on politics, is coming out swinging against Doug Ford's disastrous Bill 5.

There have been more measles cases in Ontario so far this year than the entire United States. Where are Doug Ford, Sylvia Jones, and Dr. Moore?

A cautionary tale about election forecasts: On E-Day in America back in 2016, the NYT had Clinton with an 85% chance of winning. We know how that turned out. The Economist recently gave Carney an 83% chance of winning. But it will only happen if progressives turn out to vote.

I'm really pleased to see the @liberalca.bsky.social listening to environmental experts on their platform. 10 new national parks and 15 new urban parks was a direct ask from @naturecanada.bsky.social to all the parties. #cdnpoli #elxn45

I've been following Timothy Snyder's work on democracy and fascism for a long time. I had to miss his talk last night at the Reference Library so I'm pleased I was able to sit front row for his talk at #DXC25 this morning.

New post-campaigm debriefing email from OLP President Kathryn McGarry to the party membership. I've always said the OLP Executive should be neutral in leadership races as the body that launches the process. That should include leadership reviews. This puts a thumb on the scale.
