- And people appreciate my effort. They help correct my errors, but in a kind way. And I know it’s there in my head. I dream in French sometimes now. Even my daydreams are replaying conversations and correcting my errors, reminding myself of what I should have said so I can say it better next time.

- I forgot. It’s really hard for me not to get frustrated with myself. But slowly, slowly it’s all coming back. The hardest part for me is letting myself make mistakes. I can’t get bogged down in perfectionism. If I can’t remember the exact conjugation of the word, it’s okay. People are forgiving. -

- watching French tv, practicing with Duolingo and Babbel, and I have a workbook for practice that I try to use. But for me, the words are there, back in a dusty corner of my brain. Talking to the handyman and people in shops, in our neighborhood, or on the bus is really helping me remember what -

Not yet. But French was my minor in undergrad and my translation language in grad school. It’s been almost 30 years, though, so I’m rusty, and translating from French into English is a very different skill from conversational fluency. I’m practicing every day, writing a journal in French, -

- completely in French. I talked with the handyman all in French today without resorting to Google Translate. And while I spoke in English with the groomer, it’s because she wanted the practice. So YAY! Slowly, slowly, I’m making progress!

However, this afternoon while Mona is at the groomers, I’m taking a little time to myself at the local coffee shop for a latte and a slice of red velvet cake.
