The NHS has been has been reshaped by neoliberal politics over the last 40 years to create profit opportunities. That absolutely requires it not to be comprehensive, universal or high quality, leaving space for a growing private sector. youtu.be/7vjoR7LnDqU?...

(Real policy geeks will argue the “duty to provide healthcare” had a slightly more complicated journey - indeed - but the 2012 Act was the final nail in the coffin. I want the duty back - stat - otherwise the NHS will ultimately end up just filling in the bits Trump’s pals don’t want, Medicarestyle)

Still in Dublin. And no ferry because of a storm - which has killed people.

So I'm watching Kuenssberg where any talk of climate is entirely framed in the profit motive.

Meaningful climate action must be led by the public sector through democratic processes, not market forces.

Fed Chairman says the $32trn Debt is fiscally unsustainable.

Which they say every year, then vote to lift the ceiling, every year.

When Japan wanted to pay down some of their debt, they borrowed the money, from their own bank.

Debt is a complete accounting nonsense.

Changing language changes reality

"Deficits" is not ab money. That's neoliberalism.

MMT: Real deficits are deficits of real things in our society. Deficits in health care, education, infrastruct, afford. housing etc.

Our respected friend and journalist @carolinejmolloy.bsky.social has produced excellent articles for years for Open Democracy about the influence of US corporate healthcare giants like #unitedhealth on the NHS. Will the murder of its CEO finally make @uklabour.bsky.social take notice?
Why would you take the UK’s most trusted institution, & hire in to reshape it, a firm *so hated* on its home turf in the States that ppl there are - at best - ambivalent about the assassination of its CEO?

& if you were Labour health minister Wes Streeting, why wouldn’t you stop it?🧵

In fact, Optum / United Health have been “sowing seeds” in our NHS for several yrs. Their fingerprints (& advice, consultancy & demand management software) are everywhere. They’re pals with Trump. & the revolving door in the UK goes all the way to the top. www.opendemocracy.net/en/ournhs/th...

You know that app many of us are now told to use to book your GP / other NHS appointments? The one that tries to upsell you a private medical appointment, instead of an NHS appointment? Can you guess who now owns it? Yep - US corporation United Health. www.opendemocracy.net/en/ournhs/we...

The only one of these money raising activities that the government actually does is money creation, each and every time it spends. #MMT But the sentiment expressed here is spot on. In the last 30 years 50% of public assets have been sold or given away to the private sector for ideological reasons.
Starmer to meet Saudi crown prince in push for infrastructure cash.

Why get cash from dictators at enormous cost when govt can create money, do QE for infrastructure, borrow at lower cost, tax the rich.

Seems everything is for sale in the UK.

Awareness of how denial of healthcare in the USA affects so many people has been brought to the fore by the murder of UnitedHealth’s CEO. But that same attitude now influences the politics of the NHS. youtube.com/watch?v=7_UU...

How do we define NHS privatisation? We think the best way is to see the organisation as a whole, not just clinical services.

This is a public health matter NOT a ‘Brexit problem’. There is no rational reason why the safety of our tap water should rely on European testing facilities. They should be here, in public ownership, and publicly funded.
