Starter Villain by John Scalzi

Very fun. Mildly ridiculous. Cats are the best spies.

Crossplay by Niki Smith

Figuring out your gender via cosplay? Been there.

There were too many characters to get to know them well enough for the full emotional impact. The art style, especially the coloring, was fun & unique, but it didn't help clarity.

Legends of the Leaf: Unearthing the Secrets to Help Your Plants Thrive by Jane Perrone

More plant books like this! I loved how Perrone profiled each plant, exploring botany, care tips, historical relevance, commercial trade, and other aspects.

Somebody's Daughter by Ashley C. Ford

A masterclass in memoir writing. Ford takes her father’s incarceration as the framework & shaping of her young life. This book grapples with her relationships with her mother, grandmother, siblings, peers, & teachers.

The Black Ghost: Hard Revolution by Alex Segura, Monica Gallagher, Marco Finnegan, George Kambadais, Ellie Wright, and Taylor Esposito

Lara is a hard-drinking investigative journalist turned costumed vigilante. A sketchy, piecemeal story that’s incoherent.

Along Came Amor (Primas of Power #3) by Alexis Daria

Ooof. This was a most anticipated 2025 read as a series ender, and it was at least 100 pages overwritten. Overall, I liked the bones of the story. Ava is my favorite Prima. But, I got bored midway.

Beautiful gowns, beautiful gowns.

You can just be a faggot, Donna Tartt. (I got the tshirt and everything.)

129th read of 2025:

Diamond Ring (Unwritten Rules #3) by K.D. Casey

This felt weaker — due to the time jumps — than the first 2 books but still great. It made me care about the outcome of the big game (BASEBALL!) for the entire team (not just Alex and Jake).

The Haunting of Tram Car 015 (Dead Djinn Universe #0.3) by P. Djèlí Clark

I’ve loved a lot of these stories, but this one was by far the weakest. It centers around Agents Hamed Nasr and Onsi Youssef, and they feel like significantly weaker characters here.

Taken in the Minotaur's Labyrinth (A Menagerie of Monsters #1) by Ciara Bane

This short story is part of a larger one & maybe the whole thing would've been 3 stars. However, it lacked description to set up the universe or explain what was happening.

126th read of 2025:

The Bride (Lairds' Fiancées #1) by Julie Garwood

This is an essential text that many other Romance books have copied, and it is a great book on its own. Delightful, funny, and charming. Jamie's a great heroine.

Kiss the Girl (Meant to Be #3) by Zoraida Córdova

An official adaptation of Disney's The Little Mermaid that nails the themes as it stays structurally true, makes it contemporary without nostalgia, & delivers a fab rockstar romance with a Latine cast.

124th read of 2025:

The Kiss Countdown by Etta Easton

Cute but ultimately I needed more tension and space because he's an astronaut. I wish this had been dual POV instead of only Amerie. I still can't believe she didn't know their date was to stargaze! A+ cover.

Essential Labor: Mothering as Social Change by Angela Garbes

I’m aligned with the thesis: to expand the definitions of mothering & value & reward it. Society runs on this unpaid labor. The non-memoir parts were significantly weaker, especially on disability.

122nd read:

Simplicity by Mattie Lubchansky

Lubchansky perfectly encapsulates how very absurd and disconnected this moment in time feels. Simplicity is set in 2081, but its chaos is patterned after echoes of ours. Both art and text capture relatable moments.

Marvel Voices: Heritage #1 by various creators

These Indigenous character stories felt too short and promotional. The best was “Snowguard: The Tuurngait’s Song," as it pulled through with themes, characters, and the only outstanding art.

120th read of 2025:

A Gentleman's Gentleman by TJ Alexander

I loved this! In many ways, Christopher was a very ordinary romance hero, forced through inheritance drama to marry before 25.

The great ending reinforced his Heroism. A gay trans man doing it all!

119th read of 2025:

If the Boot Fits (Cowboys of California #2) by Rebekah Weatherspoon

Sweet, but this could've used more tension. It plays with dimensions of fame, but Sam and Amanda are just too nice, as the book pulls its punches in this Cinderella retelling.

Hypnotized! A Sharktastic Love Story by Niki Brazen

Either the best book I’ve read or one of the worst. It includes such bangers as — “Today, I quit my job as a marine biologist. Because I think I'm in love with a Shark.” Fin-tabulous.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers #1) by Becky Chambers

This reads like how some people act like Firefly was. If you want a found family of humans and aliens, who mostly get along and do jobs in space, and everyone will be okay, this is it.

DC Pride 2024 #1 (DC Cultural Anthologies) by many creators

These continue to skirt the corporate pride line. Most of the stories are too polite & Gay, not Queer. They were largely safe, except for Starman & Poison Ivy. Jimenez's personal story made me cry.

Oathbound (The Legendborn Cycle #3) by Tracy Deonn

Disappointing, as I loved the first 2. Oathbound’s main flaw is that it’s too long, not picking up for ~200 pages. The tension relying on Bree's missing memories didn't work. Hoping the next one will be awesome.
