The Movie Rabbit Hole
@themovierabbithole.bsky.social
I'm Jonas from Denmark, making fake pixels for film and TV since 2005.

I make "no CGI is really just invisible CGI" videos on YouTube.

The lengths to which people will go to call a 90% CGI shot "a practical effect" is crazy.

Yes, there is a practical element in the shot (a practical element that mostly consists of computer generated interpolation frames nonetheless) but what do they think replaced the giant greenscreen? Nostalgia?

This.
Is.
So.
TRUE

I had to read that a few times because I didn't really get the contradiction, but now that I saw your reply to the same post somewhere else, I realize you meant to say "CGI is a craft" and not "CGI is slop"

Can someone explain to me the rules of who gets "and" or "as"

Christopher Nolan: "I am as dependent on visual effects, probably more so than any other filmmaker out there".
But he is aware of the public misconception.

So I've been seeing some "didn't people know 'here's Johnny' was already a pop culture reference before The Shining?"

And as a non US citizen - confirmed, I had no idea.

We only got the top selection of your film & TV and this wasn't among it.

I also still have no idea what the 3 stooges are.

Could James Spader and Kurt Russell return?

I see I ought to put Bodyguard 2 on the list

I don't know who needs to hear this today, but this is what it means when they make a practical puppet movie with "no CGI"

The funniest part of any Indiana Jones film is that Willie slaps like Indy punches

So Threads just reminded me how much it sucks

Moviegoers should stop worrying about "unnecessary scenes" in film. The flying cars, billboards and gasoline smoke stacks are all unnecessary to "the plot" of Blade Runner, but what would Blade Runner be without them? Let movies vibe.

The glorification of this needs to be stopped.
First - it's all bullshit. Any bit of acting by an actor these days is called "DID YOU KNOW this was improvised"
Second, this would be really fucking toxic
Third, actors CAN FUCKING ACT. They don't need to be "tricked" by someone else going off script

A movie has to warm up. ALL of the Home Alone booby traps are within a 10 minute window

The people who say "having VFX artists add sets and extras in post instead of filming them for real is lazy and bad filmmaking" as a negative about CGI will say "matte painting is a lost art that needs to be brought back".
Well which is it? Matte paintings never left, the tools just slowly evolved.
October 19, 2025 at 1:24 PM
So this remake is forbidden, but IF....
October 13, 2025 at 10:12 AM
CGI set extensions are just modern matte paintings, human artists creating movie magic. Here's how they work, using Wicked as an example.

When directors shoot "practical, in camera, for real", who do you think that sets them apart from and what do you think it means about the amount of CGI in the film?

time to talk about the fact that "women struggling to drink water" is for real a stock image category

Just rewatched Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) (written by Chris Columbus) and you won't believe how Harry Potter-looking it is, they even have a Dudley

It's no different than when they added the extras in post with matte paintings, except CGI dudes can move
