I have a number of friends who love her work! I haven’t read any yet, but their taste and mine overlaps a lot on other things so I should check it out at some point.

Which is the ADHD experience of going “shit, I gotta stop thinking about this so much, I’m in danger of using up the serotonin. Gotta save some for later”

Yes, that’s another classic example! It’s a horrible corporate dystopia in which people care deeply about and try to save each other.

I think that one didn’t occur to me only because I had such a hyperfixation on it earlier in the year that I’m in fandom cooldown mode on it at the moment.

I don’t reread often because there are so many new books I want to get to, but maybe it’s time. 🤔

And like, great for you if it’s your thing, but anything that escapes the worlds ills by pretending that they don’t exist just feels like false comfort to me.

This is why authors like KJ Charles and Ursula Vernon are so great—they show pain and danger that can be faced by love and solidarity.

My problem recently is that I want something comforting, but anything too cozy feels twee and insultingly fake. “The world isn’t that easy!” I want to shout at all the idyllic small town, tea-fetishizing, small-business-fetishizing books. “Stop pretending like it is!”
