Thought of you @ericdienstfrey.bsky.social when I happened upon this paragraph in Europe Central just now. Ended having to look it up because so much in here is embellished for dramatic (or comic) effect. The Kino checks out, apparently. Does the sound stuff?

Stoked. Gotta finish this first but that’s next

Love it. We seem to always find our way back to that one over here. Spent a lot of time with this one over the winter too. Had eluded me all these years owing to no domestic (US) release. Finally saw one at the right time.

Yep. The Tekiela book, which I had to reference when we first moved here bc I hadn’t seen one either, says woodchuck but everyone I know in town says groundhog.

On p 592 of 773 in this dude. Definitely been savoring. Haven’t dragged the last few pages of a book out this long since Names on the Land

Would love to see Street Singer as a proper LP here. Every once in a while, I investigate the JP issue to see if the price has gone down at all. Hard to get excited about this artwork

Only recently learned that the OG McLean/Brooks’ Street Singer session is streaming now as a stand-alone title despite never having been issued formally in the US 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, I’m in no hurry. Last one for me, so it’s my last chance to read one of his for the first time. I also keep stopping to revisit sentences like this just to bask in the craftsmanship

Thank you for reminding me. Just did it.

He said that Hassan “sounds like Herbie Nichols falling down the stairs” one time and I still think about that every time I play this. So funny

I’ve probably owned 8-9 of these over the years. Anytime I see one under a particular price — usually a 70’s pressing — I grab it so I have an extra around for someone else to take home with them

Haven’t spent much time with Algiers but I quite like these type heavy jackets ca. 2019-20

Not exactly Reid Miles, but amusing nonetheless

Teenager finally in bed. Cashing in my remaining stamina with this Xmas adjacent warm blanket

Good catch! Credited as trumpet only on the LP. I never even thought about it until this moment

So much great design from that era. 5-6 years ago, I saw a high school kid walking home from school in a period-era white Stefan Edberg hoodie. Caught me so off guard, I almost got in a car accident, haha. To this day, despite looking, I see no evidence that that design was reissued in that way

As far as I can tell, “A Personal Statement” (a one-off for an arts festival at U-M where James was a student) is their only recording. That much makes sense. I just wish they’d done more as a quartet afterward. Especially w/ Barre Philips on bass. That’s a super interesting lineup

Shame there aren’t more published recordings of Eric Dolphy playing with ESP-era Bob James.
