S.S. Forward is more of a head scratcher but if I had to guess, it's likely a similar game of telephone with the Japanese "Going Merry-go." The -go is a suffix for ships, which I'd bet gives us the S.S., and "going" probably transformed into just "forward?" No clue where Merry went

I suspected that was the case here and was actually amused when looking it up. Chinese for hyena is Liègǒu ("mane dog"), while dachsund can be Làcháng quǎn ("sausage dog"), sometimes it's referred to as a hunting dog - also apparently Liègǒu.

A lot of scanlation groups back in the day cared more about being first than being good, and to that end would often "translate" from Chinese scans, as they'd often show up online earlier than Japanese. When you're working fast on a translation of a translation, you end up with a lot mistakes!
