Looking at the world from a Hungarian perspective, one word / phrase at a time. Jó szórakozást!
Recent Hungarian meme: Gondolom, nem gyalog (jöttünk) = I guess we didn't come on foot.

Fidesz's (aka Orban's) chief money laundering poodle took a helicopter and private jet to a footy match. When asked how he got there, this was his response. Now he wants to copyright it 444.hu/2025/06/30/m...

The Hungarian for "arse-licker" is 'seggnyaló'. (segg = arse; nyal=lick, ó=that which, nyaló=licker).
Stunning! The Dutch Army has named its new tank regiment after Princess Amalia — a tribute to our future queen and a proud symbol of national strength and tradition.

The Hungarian for "hobbyhorse" is 'vesszőparipa' (vessző=rod; paripa=steed), both in the literal meaning of the object used as a toy by kids and in the figurative meaning of someone's pet topic of conversation or obsession.
I have a new hero.
This owl stole a child's hobby horse and flies around with it!

The Hungarian for "passover" is 'pészah estéje'--though most people, if they know anything at all about this, would call it 'zsidó húsvét' which literally means "Jewish Easter" and literally make no sense on any level.

Let's face it the Old Testament (Ószövetség) is truly evil.
Well this is probably the most depressing image from tonight's racist rioting

Reading Anna Karan(y)ina in Hungarian, i can't help noticing the frequency with which 'tüstént' is used as a synonym of 'azonnal', for "immediately", with the register of "forthwith".

Since the Hungarian for "xenoglossophobia"--the fear of / aversion to speaking foreign languages--is 'xenoglosszofóbia'. Then, the aversion to speaking one's native language would be "oikoglossophobia"= 'oikoglosszofóbia'.

[Just spent two blissfully English-free months]

The Hungarian for "builders' rubble" is 'sitt' from dialectic German 'Shiet' ultimately from the same root as Scheiße.

Which is funny since today it is the annual communal recycling day of unwanted household waste (lomtalanítás) and there is a lot of 'sitt' amongst the shit.

The Hungarian for "hiding place" is 'búvóhely' or 'rejtekhely'.

They are from the verbs 'bújik' and 'rejtőzik', both meaning "to hide"; 'hely' meaning "place".
Word of the Day, should you need it, is ‘latibulate’, a 17th-century verb meaning to find a corner somewhere and hide in it.

Rather despondent and dispirited (csüggedt és elszontyolodott) by the state of X, trying alternatives—again.

az aktuális hangulatom—my current mood
az éppen aktuális hangulatom—my mood right now
mai hangulatom—today's mood
a jelenlegi hangulatom—my mood presently
