Our most recent publication is our fourth bilingual Chamoru-English children’s book “An Tåya’ Elektrisidåt.” In it three Chamoru children on Guam struggle to find things to do on island after a typhoon has left them without electricity or internet. Get a copy on our website or at Guam bookstores.

Liyang Gådao or Gådao’s Cave in the village of Inalåhan in Southern Guam. The pictographs on the cave wall are thought to represent a battle between two chiefs, one from the north and one from the south. Gådao, the chief from the south, emerged victorious.

Angel Santos Latte Stone Park in Hagåtña, Guam. Ancient Chamorus used latte to elevate their homes. These latte are not originally from Hagåtña but come from the Meppo area in Southern Guam. They were displaced during US military construction in the 1950s in the Fena area and moved to this park.

Sunset from the harbor in the village of San Jose on the island of Tinian, CNMI. Tinian was a site of several battles in the Chamoru Spanish Wars in the 17th century and was also the launching point for the US atomic bomb drops on Japan in World War II.

The last mature håyun lågu tree, or Serianthes nelsonii, on the island of Guam has died.

The tree was badly hurt by the U.S. military’s clearing of limestone forest for a machine-gun range at Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz — then dealt a fatal blow by last year’s Typhoon Mawar.

Bubulao in Talo’fo’fo, Guam. This area has been the site of a large cattle ranch and also home to a large wild herd of karabao after World War II. It is a favorite hunting spot today. Its name means frightening or menacing in Chamoru.

The cliffs near Pågat, an ancient CHamoru village in Guam prior to Spanish colonization. More than a decade ago the area was identified as the location for a firing range complex for US Marines being transferred from Okinawa. Community protests and lawsuits ensued which helped save Pågat.

Fåha Massacre Memorial in Malesso’ in Southern Guam. On July 16, 1944, with US forces bombing the island in preparation to retake it, occupying Japanese forces in the village marched 30 Chamorus into a cave and massacring them. The memorial is in the hills above where the village cemetery is today.

Hila’an on the western coast of Guam. The site of an ancient village prior to European colonization, the area still contains dozens of latte, or the stone pillars upon which some of our ancestors built their homes.

Puntan Dos Amantes or Two Lovers Point, Guam circa 1970. In one of the most well-known Chamoru legends, two lovers forbidden to be together because they belonged to different classes, tied their hair together and leapt to their deaths from this cliff.

Laso’ Fouha or Fouha Rock in southern Guam near the village of Humåtak. This site is central to the creation story for the Chamoru people and represents the body of Fu’una who sacrificed herself to give life to the world and create the first people.
