I don't think we talk enough about how the Tales Of series has influenced many other JRPGs, but goes relatively uncelebrated for that.

You can thank it for mid-exploration dialogue (skits), post-battle auto-healing, and above all, nuanced takes on story telling pulled away from simply good vs evil.

I've been making top-ten GOTY lists every year for more than a decade, and this might have been the hardest ever to narrow down. What a year for video games!

With all the recent discourse, I've been reading a lot of articles; while I enjoyed E33, something about the cultural response bothered me (a lot I would say)

This article in particular is written so well and aligns with a lot of how I feel (and makes me wanna play Xenoblade Chronicles 3 haha)

I really think a lot of people are in parasocial situations they aren't aware of, whether it be their favorite singer, brand, streamer, company, etc.

I say this with zero irony: if you are even tangentially a part of a retro video game community, it is your civic duty to push back against this company and shun anyone who doesn't. This is fascism tapping gently at the door and as soon as you let it in, it's going to invite its friends.

NEW: For the last seven weeks, Naughty Dog has enacted mandatory overtime for staff to finish an internal demo of their next game, Intergalactic. The game won't be out until 2027, leaving some staff wondering: If they're crunching now, what will next year be like? www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Personally I put a lot of stock into "it's just fun to control"

This applies anywhere from 3D platforming movement to just clicking a menu option, the feedback for the player is such a big part of the experience. Tears of the Kingdom is a great example of the former, Persona 5 the latter.

Persona 5, 2017: People will give up on individuality and autonomy in favor of the comfort of echo chambers

The internet in 2025, giving up on individuality and autonomy for the comfort of echo chambers

...

Every time the internet explodes about something, I think about how Persona 5 warned us.

N é possível q a Larian já mudou completamente em 2 anos puta merda caras.
Mas é isso né? Passou batidasso o uso em E33 todo mundo deu prêmio em absolutamente tudo abriu-se a margem pra normalizar esta merda.
Divinity going into early access is going to be a real shitshow because they're annoyed by the feedback about not wanting GenAI in the game now, 2 hours after the bloomberg interview, just wait until they have to sift through thousands of pages of feedback about taking it out.

As someone that worked in gaming for a decade and a half, when people say "this year's indie games will send a message to AAA", what message do you think publishers will take from it?

The cynic in me worries it'll be: "We only need 30 person teams now, and outsource the rest"

I love that all the reactions to the Game Awards Orchestra medley on my feed was to the DK Bananza theme

The true winner of this show, that track is PEAK

It's great when a media you love like video games can make you cry during sad moments.

It's even more impressive when it can make you cry in happy moments.

Thank you, DK Bananza 😭 you were the game that did this to me this year!

Took some time to unpack a few thoughts on Expedition 33.

Watching what I thought was a "pretty good" game get transformed into A Cultural Object has been disheartening.

So I have some thoughts on glitz, glamour, and respectability...

That's exactly what happened. Who's talking about any of the other nominees today? It felt like none of them mattered.
I think Moist actually said it best in his video, E33 is a very good game that did solidly win in the categories that it one. However it was allowed to outshine a lot of other solid contenders who deserved some spotlight. It feels like its THE ONLY good game that came out this year.

Avowed is the Saints Row 2 of this year imho

Prioritizing fun and not trying too hard to be a "serious work of art", which only some succeeded this year (Blue Prince👍) and other games not as much

Avowed's world may be static but its no different than say, an Action JRPG. And it does action SO well
