I tried to duck a recession by going to law school (that's me in the 2008-2010 high point). It doesn't really work. Once out there are tons of new lawyers and still few jobs. I had yo take whatever I could get and as a result I'll never actually catch up to those before or after me.
Law school is back (it's not shown in the chart because it's so early and the numbers so volatile, but as of yesterday the number of applicants for next year was up another 28%).

In criminal cases in Michigan attorneys do not have the power to subpoena documents. My niche ethical stance is that an attorney who does that is issuing court orders illegally and should be sanctioned by the court and disciplined by the bar.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

Saw a 75 year old white man in rural Michigan with a Chinga la Migra hat this morning. Hope dies last.

You can substitute "fascist" for British or English and "antif-ay" for IRA in Irish rebel songs and be 3/4ths of the way to a decent anti-ICE song. Still working on substitutes for Belfast and Derry.

I do not get why anyone is obsessed with this useless fuck.

Kind of feels like feds occupying our city for a month, killing one person and shooting another while attacking neighborhoods with chemical weapons and kidnapping hundreds of people already counts as a civil war whether the Guard arrives or not, but what do we know?

Go on home, Texas soldiers, go on home. Have you got no bloody homes of your own?

Took a quick read through press releases for the last two years, I think the only other individuals Gov. Whitmer has deemed worthy of multiple day flag lowering are Pope Francis and Queen Elizabeth. Mass shootings get multiple days. Military, fire, and police killed on duty get 1.

Increasingly of the mind that the "distraction" rhetoric comes from a deeply-rooted belief that what we're witnessing is merely a form of dictatorial cosplay.

The problem which is apparently invisible for some reason is that even assuming this were true, laughing it off is unacceptable.

Going to see @suicidemachines.bsky.social on Sunday. I haven't seen them since 2006 in Marquette and they broke up and didn't play another show for years afterwards. So, good luck everybody.

There are no distractions. It's all bad. Systematically stripping trans people of their rights, guys in balaclavas shoving any brown person with a tattoo into a ummarked vans, ending healthcare for millions. It's all in service of fascism and technofeudalism. It's all one thing. That's the point.

At the rally in Lansing there was street preacher asking, "Are you teaching your kids to follow Jesus, or are you teaching them to go against the government?" I didn't want to give away any spoilers for the book he was holding, but he is not going to like what the government does to his boy.

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.

So, since bad history is damaging: when the civil rights movement talked about "nonviolence" they meant a set of tactics. They planned actions for maximum disruption and intentionally defied police and laws.

This is very different from how "peaceful protest" is meant by many using it today.

For a long time @kairyssdal.bsky.social's voice meant that my commute was longer than usual that day. I only started following him because I met a guy that sounded just like him. Now I know he kicks ass and is the official voice of Abolish ICE in my head.
