If you are ever visiting or passing through western Mississippi, I strongly recommend taking a trip to visit these. As heartbreaking as the history is regarding the way the structure was built, the ruins serve as an important reminder of the past. A surreal ruin in a beautiful southern forest. (2/2)

Today, I visited the Windsor Plantation ruins in Claiborne County, Mississippi.

Built by enslaved hands, they are a reminder of the dark past of the United States & a warning not to repeat it.

They are as massive & beautiful as they are tragic. (1/2)

Several of them are shorter, with a few only half their height. All of them show signs of charring and age since they are over 170 years old. A forest and sunset sky makeup the backdrop behind the ruins. Multiple portions of stone & brick pillars lie scattered across the forest floor. They are overgrown with moss and plants, showing their age & reminding us of the past. A car sits parked in front of the ruins of the Windsor mansion. A row of partially charred and worn stone and brick pillars stand tall in the background. These 45-foot tall pillars Dwarf the car for scale. Showing their might & the amount of work put in by the enslaved hands who were forced to build them. A forest trail opens up with a set of 23 massive pillars in the distance beyond. The pillars stand tall, although slowly decaying with a bright and beautiful white and light blue sunset sky in the background.

If you want a peek into North American Archeology, here's a map that (roughly) breaks up the regions we work in.

There are definitely tribes that do not agree with these classifications, so keep that in mind. As an archeologist, these are sort of the general regional classifications we use. (1/3)
A map showing the general culture areas that North American archeologists use to break up North and Central America into sub-regions. Starting from South to North, the islands of the Caribbean Sea and the coast of northern South America is labeled "Caribbean". This region includes the Taino and Arawak peoples. The region from roughly modern-day Guatemala to the Rio-Grande River along the modern US-Mexico border is labeled "Mesoamerica" and includes groups like the Toltec and the Aztec Empire. The "Southwest" region encompasses Arizona, Western New Mexico, and extends down to the eastern coast of the Gulf of Baja. This includes the Hopi, Apache, and Yaqui. The "California" region follows the coast of modern-day California from the tip of the Baja Penninsula to the top of the state of California and includes the Cochimi & Pomo peoples. The "Southeast" region stretches from the US state of Florida to Tennessee and west to Louisiana with the Cherokee and Natchez peoples. The "Northeast" archeology region includes the modern eastern US states up into southern Canada and stretches around the entire Great Lakes region. Tribes here include the Illinois and Huron. The "Great Plains" region stretches from central Canada down into northern Mexico and includes the Blackfoot and Comanche tribes. The "Great Basin" Region is smaller and includes most of modern day Nevada, the Sierra Nevada mountains, much of Utah, and parts of southern Idaho. Peoples here included the Utes and Shoshone. Modern Idaho straight up into southern Canada is a small region known as the "Plateau" which includes the Salish and Yakima people. The entire pacific northwest stretching up to Alaska is labeled as the "Northwest Coast" region and includes the Chinook and Tlingit. Large Swaths of modern Canada are labeled the "Sub-artic" and "Artic" for what is left outside and inside the Artic Circle. These include the Inuit and Cree peoples. All regions have dozens to hundreds of tribes not included on the map.

It is such a quick & digestible $12 read that uses real history to show how we can stand up in this moment.

Resistance requires that people be informed.
