A brilliant book.
If you are at all interested in WW2, in what Britain was like in the late 30s and during the war, in debunking some myths and learning some history, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

You can get this paired with the Elgar cello concerto on DG.
My personal favourite recording of the Dvořak (born OTD 1841) glorious Cello Concerto is the Fournier/Szell partnership on DG. The Karajan/Rostropovich is still a great love, but I find Fournier’s wistful approach brings even more satisfaction for me. What’s your favourite?

Gunter Wand's 6th with the Cologne radio symphony orchestra.
Happy 201st birthday to the great Anton Bruckner, born on 4 September 1824. Bruckner now appears to be the ‘must record’ composer for conductors, much as Mahler has been for decades. Which are you favourite Bruckner Symphonies and recordings?

It is a great recording. Thanks for the reminder!
#NowSpinning Karajan’s May 1976 Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique. This recording is now almost 50 years old, yet it sounds very fresh. I’ve always liked Karajan’s 1970s Tchaikovsky and this is no exception.

Astonishing.
No brush, no pencil. Just a typewriter.

Artist James, using a 1930s Smith Premier typewriter, typed out this painting.

This is very true.
When we talk about horror movie villains I am almost always astounded that DeNiro's Cape Fear performance and Goodman's 10 Cloverfield Lane performance aren't given more props.

Thanks for sharing! This looks very interesting.
Another enterprising CPO release from Howard Griffiths. In the 1790s, the symphonies of Adalbert Gyrowetz (1763-1850) were almost as revered as Haydn's, but it's the more substantial concertante works that impress here. Most enjoyable when so splendidly performed.

I enjoy visiting the Field Museum.
I will be spending a few days in Chicago later this year. Aside from the Art Institute, the Chess Records museum, and some record shops, where should I go?

Josephine Tey was one of the greatest crime novelists of all.
“In 1990, the UK CWA issued a list titled ‘The Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time.’ Number one on the list was THE DAUGHTER OF TIME by Josephine Tey. It was a good call then, it’d still be a good call now.”

Josephine Tey (1896–1952) was born #OTD, 25 July
