Man, I remember when the @theatlantic.com was a ringing, lonely voice against incipient fascism. The articles were incredible. And now the editors let this through?

CANADIAN TREACHERY
From the Atlantic attempt to justify Bari Weiss' decision. What's Canadian for "perfidious Albion?"

The presumption here, that Canadians inherently owe some sort of duty to the American president which has been betrayed, is just '51st state's with an undergraduate degree.

The speed and width of assuming Canada is not a real country should concern us all.

In which Graeme Wood and the Atlantic accuse Canada of 'treachery' for reporting something the President and his bootlickers don't like.

I'm not aware of any oath or duty Canada owes to either. 51st state shit with more erudition.
Bari Weiss was right about how to improve the “60 Minutes” CECOT report, Graeme Wood argues—but her “drama-detector, so refined when seeking out news stories, seems to have failed her when avoiding it in her own newsroom.”

Genuinely obnoxious how many Americans decry the absence of civic virtue as having led us to this moment and then start doing the "not my president/foreign policy/institutions" thing

Like its not a mistake that JD Vance mentions canada as a bad example of immigration. Hes getting that from right wing sphere. Joe rogan said he wouldnt travel to Canada because we are truly a communist country.

even if its not invasion, they are going to make it painful for any mildly left govt

I think some people think its silly to include canada/greenland here but i really think you need to look at the rhetoric of like claremont freaks, tucker carlson and rufo. They genuinely see our social policy as something to be eliminated and have been advocating using US powers to do so
Even when these guys are gone for a bit, this stuff ends up with its own kind of inertia. And i think the monroe doctrine stuff will be plaguing the americas for the foreseeable future

For 11+ years now, I have essentially had to witness a school of thought in the West that essentially argues that what has happened to Ukraine at Russia's hands has been earned by past sin, by excess nationalism, by all these nasty little things.

Trump’s foreign policy isn’t “noninterventionism,” it is a kind of neo neo conservatism devoted to imposing authoritarian ethnonationalism abroad instead of democracy (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

Now we understand what Vance was doing a few weeks ago.

"JD Vance made a series of posts...saying [Canada's] living standards are “stagnating” because of all the “foreign-born” people living here.

...Vance says Canada’s elected leaders have created “immigration insanityby leaning into diversity.”

This is far beyond 'NATO as we've known it is done.'

"The Trump administration had “a clear and consistent vision for Europe: one that prioritises US-Russia ties and seeks to divide and conquer the continent, with much of the dirty work carried out by nationalist, far-right European forces.”

Very poor framing for this piece. I think Trump II is such a challenge for conventional analysts compared to Trump I because it has added a racist civilizational layer to its narrative of grievance over free trade and NATO burden-sharing.

And that's a language many people aren't equipped to parse.

It is also a hell of a lot for American allies to take. At times it seems like the US military and defence community are still entitled to professional pride and the benefit of the doubt, while allies are expected to swallow whatever rhetoric may come without rocking the boat by pressing the issue.

The problem there being that words mean things, especially when they officially come from the United States. It’s exhausting and unreasonable to expect others to guess when American leadership means what it says, and when it’s just lying to keep Trump and Vance happy.
