I definitely agree many gen AI users seem not to like acknowledging the world is more complicated than they like.

(And I apologize for correcting posts so often. Social media is worryingly public and on-the-record sometimes.)

I guess it doesn't matter and you might be right (would have to think this through more). I just try to be nuanced to show gen AI chasers the hate isn't a knee-jerk reaction. There's even studies on mental decline of heavy AI users now, it's bad.

I have hobbyist ties to the open-source software space, where openness to new technolgy can be useful. The world is complicated!

Speaking for myself, I initially didn't realize all the big models will auto-complete many novels, or large sections of them, verbatim. Up to the point of hearing that, I was afraid to be the "grumpy old person hating new tech".

For example, some people use character DOT ai (I don't want to give that service free SEO) to roleplay in their free time, for themselves, without publicizing it. Even if they directly took novel excerpts for that, if they never release it I guess it's fine...? But I'm happy to learn.

When artbreeder was new, I used it to start a cover. But once I heard the moral questions, I redid the drawing entirely myself, from scratch, new angle & w/o AI reference. Turned out more flawed, but it's mine.

I believe some still don't 100% get how AI "learns". But the excuses are wearing thin.

(Some uses of gen AI I understand. Like those revolving around hobbies people do unpaid. I doubt many would mind e.g. free fan art openly taking pre-existing named characters as-is.

But that personal use isn't what drives the hype and destruction.)

I want to think it's not either deliberate or lack of understanding how gen AI works, but it's getting harder every day.

So much of the software development world is kind of mindlessly adopting this, it's sad. Most of open-source is built on copyright meaning something, which people seem to forget.

this might be the scariest idea i've ever seen 😨😨 (didn't write poems but terrible short stories)

IGN has reported on issues with gen AI before. www.ign.com/articles/shi... Might be worth asking Cameron on his stance, given it seems to clash with the environmental messaging too.

This has a lovely voice 🥰 and it taught me a new word. I've never heard of foolscap before.
