“Shit,” REDACTED blurted out and reflexively knelt down on the wet grass, Addy placed on her thighs. “What is it?” Isaac asked. “Stop whatever you’re up to,” REDACTED said loudly into Addy’s ear. A quick touch at the neck offered little palpable, instead there were agonizingly slowing and fading thumps. “Hey!” REDACTED shouted at Addy. “Do I run for help?” Isaac asked sharply, but REDACTED barely heard him over the panicked white noise mounting in her ears. “Stop it!” REDACTED grabbed Addy tighter, shook her, to revive her from whatever had befallen her. “Come back!” Then REDACTED felt a weak twitch, and her forceful desperate squeeze of Addy’s blanket-covered sides caused a tremble in response. The racing light traces on the skin returned to their normal intensity. “Shouldn’t I get help then?” Isaac repeated in an insistent tone. “Addy?” REDACTED said, then got up and added, “Let’s go. Let’s just go.” She almost slipped on the grass, shuddering, balancing her girlfriend poorly. There, Addy finally huffed over her shoulder and patted her. “Is this a common occurrence?” Isaac asked, rushing after them. REDACTED shook her head, marching ahead with urgency. “Isaac, it’s complicated. It’s not like... Addy, please communicate with me?”

This meeting was pointless. Professor Abbott turned to Perry. “The main worry beyond erasure of her mind is if it were to absorb her magic, isn’t it?” Like in this very second from my pacifying spell? “And that it’d destabilize?” A discussion ensued, while Addison tried to find a small, lively plant amid the gray out on campus, scouring the outside ground. Early students passed by, but she ignored them. There, that flower-shaped ghost entity, up close it had a tiny life web. Its inner flow was fascinating, slower, barely a pulse but rather a glacial wave that was intense. “So, does Ms. Clark want that?” Abbott asked with a raised voice. “The removal, should we attempt it, as futile as it likely is?” No. Like that would work. “She says she doesn’t,” REDACTED relayed. “The school is her guardian, isn’t it?” Perry asked. Hayes shook his head. “Her mother is. But we can’t risk a removal against Addy Clark’s will anyway. It would be a useless formality.” “You can’t?” Perry asked. “Isn’t this grave enough to consider it?” Ronda raised her eyebrows. “She can’t even take a simple patching rune. That makes an attempt very immoral, since if—” “Now, hold on.” Perry scratched his chin and followed up with medical questions Addison both only half understood and didn’t want discussed.

A mage, frail and hunched, came to the entrance after Ludovic had used the iron knocker. “How dare you!” the mage screamed at them through the crack of the door, hoarse and sharp. “Down this path, I’ll void you! Including her, demon-infected! You reckless f**king buffoons!” “Both seem to have resisted,” Ludovic said. “Like your dimwitted kind knows—” The mage’s angry spitting melted in Addison’s mind. “Please,” Mom said after Addison had inadvertently huffed. “Travel at the base, f**kheads!” Then the mage slammed the door. The wind bit into Addison’s cheeks while they stood still. “It’s half an hour away,” Ludovic said. “What’s her state?” “She’s so cold,” Mom cried. “I’m better, but she’s barely moving.” The protesting grunt from Addison’s mouth made Mom stop. She unglued one of her fingers from Mom’s shoulder and raised it. “She’s pointing along the path,” Ludovic said in an upbeat tone. Mom shrieked and her head shot around. “She’s doing what?!” After an eternity of a walk they stopped at a lonely bench, out with them in the middle of nowhere, the path branching up ahead. When Addison’s body was sat down onto the horrible icy snow and dragged up by its arm to barely stand, she drifted off.

REDACTED’s warm whisper pulled Addison back. “What’s up?” “Hm,” she mumbled. That wasn’t a useful response. “You’re somehow still tired, aren’t you?” REDACTED asked. Isla turned to them. “Is it only me or do you two look more down than at breakfast? Maybe you should come watch our scrattenge training after lunch? It’ll be fun.” “Wanna go see it, please?” Addison whispered. REDACTED’s lips thinned. “It’s a fifteen minutes walk to the arena. If anything derails regarding your state, there’ll be one teacher around for basic healing at best, and no Nurse Lanzon.” Remember the deal, Addy. “Won’t go if you say no,” she forced out quietly. Isla tilted her head. “Not sure what you guys are discussing, but lemme stress, I’m not planning to have her join the players. She’s the type to crack her neck—sorry, Addy—so as long as she isn’t healed well yet, no participating for ya.”

What was going on? Addison’s body was spread out on its back on the mattress. The others surrounded them, some standing tensely with legs wide apart, Ronda even aiming her wrist. REDACTED knelt almost like a priest for the last rites, sitting with one hand reaching for Addison’s shoulder. The cramped room, with the large bunk beds and books and clutter leaving little space, didn’t seem suitable for such formalities. A threatening exchange of thick magic beams went from Addison’s physical skull, to her bracelet and back in a circle. The bracelet was blazingly bright in ways only she saw, sparking and spewing under the constant onslaught Addison applied to it. Keep off me, you piece of shit! “Come back,” REDACTED croaked, her shape flickering like from an injury, and remaining by the side of Addison’s motionless vessel. “We’ll need to clear the nearby rooms,” Ronda said. “What?!” From the youthful shapes on the ground, one shot up. Maybe it was Onyx.

In their dorm room, the gurgles out of Addison’s mouth turned to snotty spit, and when she tried to keep it in, it noisily shot out of her nose. Ew, you unsanitary slime monster! “What was that?” REDACTED’s head rose. She was hugging Addison’s pasty limbs, lying intertwined. When Addison did another peek outside, she didn’t find Stewart anymore. But the curious ramp at the entrance seemingly made progress, the mage using runes to lift and place stone plates covering one side of the stairs. Already, Addison wanted to quit her rest day and chase Stewart. By now, Anna, Isla, Mom, and Ronda had awoken, only Maryam miraculously hadn’t. “How is she?” Mom sat up on what had been REDACTED’s bunk. “Addy, that was the most alien snort, no offense,” Isla said from above. Admittedly, Addison had sounded like one of these rich people vacuum cleaners. “I heard you two did quite the trip yesterday.” Between sleepy glances, Anna who was wearing a fleece gown was digging in a pile of books on her nightstand. When Anna bit her lip and scanned over her entire belongings, Addison floated close. “Hm, Anna, behind the bed, next to the wall,” Addison whispered. Addison nodded. “‘s fine.” The faint, crawling web seemed soft compared to how it would act once she tried the rune for real. Professor Pittman stroked his gray beard. “Everyone, stop. Watch again.” He repeated the long movement, Addison rubbing her temple from the headache while she stared. Once again they tried it, Addison still half guessing the shape. “Better.” Professor Pittman folded his arms. “Now target a nearby wall or the ground and fire it. If you hit someone else or a crystal you’ll get detention. Fist, posture, go. Imagine air shooting ahead like from a cannon. Do better than the second year students earlier.” Addison proceeded to sink down to her knees next to her table. “Stop,” Professor Pittman barked. “Everyone, stop. Ms. Clark, on your feet, no experiments. Mind your posture.” Frowning, Addison got up. “Should be—” “No excuses. Use every standard precaution.” “I really should be kneeling,” Addison began, but the professor cut her off with a wave of his hand. “You asked this morning whether you ‘pass,’ show us then. She heard a clone of Mom cry in the distance. Real or fake? Addison found herself in a landscape of white, with outlines of mountains, rocky, with little traces of vegetation or animals. The wind was harsh and cold. A cliff changing shape with a jarring rift in space and time made Addison leap away in fear. A sea of what might be broken chairs, tables, cracked bricks, torn beams, and less decipherable smaller rubble covered the hazy plateau around her, with alluring magical sources buried inside that drew her close. This was a garbage disposal site. The humming from Mom was familiar. It was a song from childhood, sung when she was sick. The cold around Addison’s body felt horrible, freezing her mind so badly she had to force herself to still care. The site was on some mountaintop, wind dragging at them, the ground feeling like ice and rock, covered in broken hard pieces of wood that stabbed her sides. Mom was kneeling, next to Addison’s body, but not touching it. Rubbing her own hand, Mom looked like she was hurt, and Addison wondered if it was from her.

Hidden below was the basement where the watcher stone’s onslaught against Addison’s self became relentless, and everywhere were dark, evil tunnels made of sharp uneven rocks that seemed ancient. Her distant body’s thick beams penetrated the soil to defend her floating presence. The enclosing walls were spotty, cracked, and rotten, a complete antithesis to the inviting dorm halls above. Come, shitty stone, let’s dance! “It’s third underground level, but...” “Banned area. How close... we go?” “...her, the glow?” Briefly retreating to them outside, Addison reoriented herself. “She can’t go any closer,” RETRACTED loudly said, her voice cracking. “She’s barely holding on.” “Holding on how?” the Chief asked. “Have we started anything?”

REDACTED. REDACTED was nudged awake by Isla for her shift before sunrise. She didn’t get to read her textbook on societal trends in the mage world and arguments for a more regulated upper class for long, before Addy awoke. Anna moved on her bed and Isla caused fabric noises above, but both calmed down again quickly. It was too early to want to get up. Addy seemed breathless while REDACTED smelled her wild hair, them lying intertwined. Hm, bit musty, no way she would like that. Suddenly, Addy moved in for a kiss. Her shaky lips and tongue investigated REDACTED’s with Addy gasping, and REDACTED felt her neck. The pulse was racing, thumping, with stumbling jolts. “Go slowly,” REDACTED mumbled in between their kisses. Addy moved some inches away, but she grinned in the reading lantern’s dim light. “How are you?” REDACTED whispered into her ear. There, Addy’s warm fingers on her back did two taps, yes. REDACTED’s gaze was drawn to the dark corner of the room where the outline of the heavy cylinder was. “I should get you the oxygen.” She made motions to get up, but Addy pulled her back. Shaky rubs from Addy were followed by silence. “What’s up?” REDACTED whispered. Finally, Addy whispered, “Sorry.” “What are you apologizing for?” REDACTED felt uneasiness crawl over her skin, and she moved the blanket aside and sat up properly. There, Addy clawed after her, and REDACTED reached for her waist and helped her sit as well. Come here, you desperate flower. Stepping back, Isaac scratched his chin and scanned them head to toe A tall bookcase right behind them seemed to tower and watch over the scene. Addison pointed at her mouth and mimed talking. “Wanna talk?” REDACTED asked into her ear. And after Addison’s frustrated huff, the penny seemed to drop. “Somebody talked, back during the attack?” Yes. Addison dug up syllables. “Heal... me, merge—” “They wanted what?!” REDACTED’s shout made Addison flinch. After a moment, Addison got out, “Said no.” Anna folded her arms. “Are you guys fighting?” “I’ll have that lovely Ronda person get tea,” Mom said. “Maybe we should go another day?” “Mom!” Addison croaked in protest while REDACTED’s hand was stuck in her hair, seemingly lost. “The teachers don’t know yet?” REDACTED whispered. “Can I tell them, and am I correct whoever spoke was someone unknown to us?” Yes, yes, to all of that. “Could I get a hold of you for a second?” Isaac asked. That he had fully heard their secretive whispers seemed unlikely, so that was curious. His almost threatening tone couldn’t mean anything good.

“No worries, Ms. Clark, we’ll try to get a decision before breakfast, one way or the other. And I apologize again, this isn’t something any of our students are expected to go through.” “Hm, was more thinking that I’ll get lost,” Addison said. They entered a squat but wide building with a gabled roof and thin tall windows along its front. Inside was parquet flooring and about twenty or thirty separate school desks, the occasional burn mark or dent on them. Giant cabinets had open shelves stuffed with books and tiny statuettes. To their left, sitting in a circle of chairs next to the unoccupied teacher’s desk, were Professor Hayes, Abbott, and that new, bearded guy, Pittman, who always looked disgruntled. Addison hesitantly joined in on a free chair. It felt like a tribunal. Professor Hayes smiled. “You seem to be feeling better. Good.” Addison shrugged. Fidgeting her wrinkly fingers, Professor Abbott said, “This isn’t the safest idea. It really isn’t.” “We talked about this,” Professor Coleman-Hunt said. “They were adamant she had already managed it.” Professor Abbott crossed her short legs. She was wearing dark robe. “What if they were somehow mistaken?”

She can’t figure out the orchid color alteration rune.” After flying over, it didn’t take Addison long to spot the teary girl on an armchair. Isla grinned. “And we all know REDACTED knows how to do it. Why don’t you two go real quick? We’ll continue the game when you’re back.” REDACTED forehead furrowed and she scratched Addison’s unflatteringly messy hair on her lap. “Go,” Addison whispered. “Will stay up even if it’s longer.” REDACTED got up alone and paused in the door frame. “If Addy goes unresponsive, don’t go do anything about it, okay? Just get me.” After REDACTED had left, Anna poked her own chin. “Wait, we couldn’t just wake her? I thought at night she’s at risk only because it’s for so long...”

“Didn’t they claim the Addy one was dead?” “She probably is, look at her.” “Why’s she bringing a corpse in here?” someone asked. “All fake. The stuck-up one must have grown to like drama.” “What do you mean? They locked us in here, so something’s up if these two were let outside anyway.” REDACTED once more walked to the nearby Hydra table, stumbling with the entirety of unwieldy Addy in her arms, toward the terrified and disgusted faces, students mumbling and shuffling aside. Debby and her both wordlessly climbed onto the bench, Addy placed on REDACTED’s lap and wrapped up like a huge, sullied, soaked christmas gift. “Hey,” REDACTED whispered. “Rest now.” Isla approached them again. “I didn’t dare ask about her, we heard bad things. Wow, Addy, you’re a damn tough b__ch.” “It’s not a corpse?” a Hydra student asked. “But what do we do?” Debby asked, white as a sheet. Ronda scratched her chin. “I’m unsure about her outlook regarding that.” With her outside look and imbalance, it couldn’t be good. “I’ll ask old colleagues. A basic wheelchair with the different elevations and stairs, that would require changes. Or perhaps we can source a magical cane, have her test that. This disability not being curable is not heard of here, and there are no established aether spellings for devices to easily work around lacking access. But we’ll devise one if need be.” “I hate requiring changes,” A whispered to E. “You wanna be no burden so badly?” E replied. “I don’t mind getting you around, but you need something better quick.” “Right, your girlfriend’s not a horse,” Isla said from above, and when A floated over she saw her grin sheepishly.

“Sweetie, should we paint the wallpapers?” Mom asked, pointing at the kitchen walls. “What color would you like?” Mom, just a sec’! Outside, the mage had stopped behind a dense bush. He seemed to be holding a letter, “Addy” written on the envelope, scanning their new home from afar like he was figuring out where there might be a postbox. But then he flinched. Perhaps he had heard the enforcer walk near the front of the house? Immediately, Addison floated closer and flung the small envelope out of his fingers, catching it mid-air with a red grid. When the bright magic energy shot over from her far away body, she heard her own grunt while struggling to aim. It was unruly again from so far off! The mage jumped aside, his mouth twitch indicating a surprised uttering. Then he hurried away between the trees, fast, not giving the hovering letter a second look. His boyish hair and hoodie seemed familiar. Perhaps it was the broader-shouldered one vaguely reminiscent of Isaac, named Marbin. “What’s up with her now?” Mom asked.

Mom was still on a chair, Dad gone, and on a bed was someone new. It was a girl, with some hazy apparatus gripping the center of her trunk to perhaps keep her immobile. Her life web at her back was almost as flickering and damaged as Addison’s. Some parent stood by the girl’s side, tall, lanky, and the pose slightly hunched and twisted, almost pained. Addison wondered what time of day it was. As the new girl spoke, her voice was familar. Was this Anna? E. responded and then pressed Addison’s sides. Ouch. Listen properly, already. “She’s your friend, right?” Mom asked, looking over to Anna. “Yeah,” E. said, her tone tense. “I still don’t get how the Institute let this horrible thing happen,” the man said, who presumably was Anna’s father. “One trip I don’t join, and then this.” Anna strangely didn’t respond to him, but folded her arms. Mr. Lanzon applied a herbal cream to Anna that made her twitch. “She should recover fine over night. The Institute clinic prepared her well.” “Hm,” Addison mumbled into E.’s ear. What’s wrong? “Addy,” E. whispered, hoarse. “Hey. Count us for me?” No. “Um, what? Please?” Sigh, yes, okay. But what’s wrong? “Why’s Addy holding up fingers?” Anna asked. Her always thin voice was now even thinner and sounded brittle.

Emmaline. They passed the teachers’ table in the back and moved toward the student crowd, and Emmaline shivered as Addy mentally pointed toward a group, likely to warn her. Headmaster Hayes, Professor Abbott, and a mage with a blue Institute badge intercepted them. The busy crowd of students provided a deceptively innocuous background, defied by Hayes’ grim expression. “Do you have the letter with you?” the headmaster asked. “Another one with aether traces was seized in the Institute,” the mage said. “We were asked to check yours again to investigate.” No. Emmaline trembled, Addy now calmly rubbing Emmaline’s monitoring hand on her clavicle. “We destroyed it, I’m sorry!” The teachers’ glares pinned them down relentlessly. “So you’ve read it?” the mage asked. “I-I, u-um,” Emmaline stuttered. But Addy came to the rescue and tapped yes on her hip. Emmaline shivered in relief. “Addy says she did!” The headmaster’s eyes cut into Emmaline’s soul. “Will you share what it said?” Addy sighed and mentally pointed to Emmaline herself. She couldn’t be serious!? “No, you can’t!” Emmaline heard Addy huff when she accidentally bumped into her wheelchair. “Don’t make... you can’t make me decide—” “Maybe I can help?” Isaac said and looked at the headmaster. “Could we have a sound barrier, just us three?”

The heated spell exchange between Addison (POV)’s skull and the sparking bracelet went on, tugging at the strings of her mind. “Hey, now,” REDACTED whispered and caressed her wet cheek. “You had another seizure. It hit you even though you were up, an extremely long and scary one. Ronda said perhaps you can’t handle fevers well.” Addison pouted, her sudden tears drying up. In a tranquil pause, the campus tree felt relevant. It had briefly showed color, had that been real? She flew outside, only seeing the orange-gray ghost world. Longingly, she stared at the hazy surfaces. The pills against Addison’s lips brought her attention back, and she swallowed. “...dangerous, if that’s true,” Ronda’s gray shape said, finishing a monologue. “Should check her for that later.” That sounded annoying. “I’ll bring more expertise.” Sigh. On a whim, Addison turned on REDACTED’s lap to have her body face the others, but the effort made her faint. After the inevitable gap in time, REDACTED’s strong arms held her shoulders perfectly in place. “Addy, you look wrecked but also weirdly chill now,” Isla said. Anna uneasily scratched her elbows. “She looks so out of it.” Addison opened her eyes, focused them toward Anna’s pulsating, lively shape. Then REDACTED’s spoon poked Addison’s lips. She forced herself to take a bite. It seemed to be noodles with bits of tomato. Onyx bit into something possibly leaf-like, then they seemed to look over. “Is she doing a new spell? It feels like it.” “Your hand is tingly,” REDACTED said. “Addy, is it still safe, it’s not acting up again?”

Ronda and Lanzon busily walked around, fetching items that Addison (the POV character) couldn’t quite make out from the many shelves. “Janette, try to relax,” the man said. “Dad, I’m trying to,” the Janette girl said, lying back with a huff. Addison recognized her name, she was an older Hydra student. One that hadn’t seemed too mean or malicious. “You there, CENSORED!” Janette raised her head again. “Is it true that she helped save us? Why’s she here?” Saving was a strong word. Don’t know, given how horribly it had crashed anyway. “Wow, hey,” CENSORED whispered. “She says she’s not sure she did,” she added loudly, “but she tried to.” “Thanks,” the boy said. His voice was unfamiliar. “I heard there was a kidnapping, like it was a cover-up. Why would they kidnap students?” Wait, did he mean at the same time as the crash? “There was some incident farther ahead of us,” Mom said. “There was?” CENSORED mumbled, seemingly in thought. “Is she responsive?” Ronda stepped closer and raised her arm for a rune. “If she is, I have to ask her questions.” No. “She, um, doesn’t feel up to it,” CENSORED said sadly and pulled Addison’s aching side closer. Dad’s posture tensed visibly in a way that told Addison he would berate her, but then Mom grabbed his shoulder. “Don’t,” Mom said to him.

(POV) trembled as she stepped back from blanket-wrapped Addy and her wheelchair. She stared, watching them leave. Isaac walked over. “Is that smart? Letting Addy do that again?” “I don’t want to think about that!” (POV) forced her legs to carry her to her spot, and she sunk down on the familiar, hard bench. “Don’t let her use you,” Isaac said. “Please don’t.” (POV) stared at the table’s surface. She wasn’t in the mood to explain they had talked about Addy’s ill-advised trip already. Yet, she suddenly found herself digging in her bag, feverishly, until she found the small woven ring token still present. Shivering, she buried it in her fist. Isaac waved at her head. “Your hair is a tad sticky over there.” “Oh.” (POV) felt up the spot and untangled it. “Yeah, Addy saw something, but they took care of it.” Levi leaned over from the other side. “Don’t tell me that weird bug of Rick’s landed on (POV)’s head and somehow did something?” “What do you mean?” (POV) blinked at him. “Stop bothering Rick,” someone threw in.
