✔️ Thick of It fandom, tho unlikely (it's so small)

I write, vid, and rarely art; most of my stuff is here: archiveofourown.org/users/teyla

Current fannish project: new VUK site!
Got fed up with the film & media industry, quit my job, spent a glorious six months unemployed and writing my best fic by far, and then started to work as a person who builds websites bc I had been doing that anyway for years and you can't be gloriously unemployed forever (unfortunately)
What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

Experiments in writing validators to try and keep a vid database clean show that standard Python fuzzy string matching does not recognize simplified and traditional characters as the same character 😔

I mean, that's not unexpected. Still, a missed chance to impress me, Python!

Remember this? Embarrassed to admit that it took me until today to realise that this concept doesn't have one homepage, but two.

Two.

Because... that's how domains work, right? 😭
The digital industry trend to assume that knowing how the internet works is optional for working on web UX is so distressing. Imagine a concept for a car that suggests square wheels would better meet the needs of the target audience. That's the kind of concept I'm currently being asked to validate 😭

#uspol You should be proud. This is what people in my country didn't do, even though they knew, even though they didn't agree with what was happening. Some did and they were martyred, but what's better than being few and martyred is being many and win. Thank you for being one of the many.
Well, I'm very proud to say I chased ICE for four blocks, and got hit by a car! ( Nudged, nudged by a car. I am perfectly fine.) My throat hurts from screaming GET THE FUCK OUT OF OUR TOWN!

There was mob here in St. Paul of 100 people screaming at them, filming them, and chasing them down.

Every night I have to leave my clothes lying on the bathroom floor bc he may be geriatric but he's still faster than me when it comes to making a nest in my pants

I know it's a lot of effort to adjust notification behaviour to my individual state of having seen them but I don't care. I'm letting you sell my data, what I want in return are notifications that know when they need to be resent and when they need to stop bothering me with at least 95% accuracy

TIL that the TPFDL, one of the Pentagon's most crucial and sophisticated war planning documents, is commonly referred to as the "tip-fiddle" 🤔

"Yes, sir, one tip-fiddle, coming right up!" 🫡

PSA for anyone who needs to hear it: decline politely when doctors ask whether they can use AI to summarise their convo with you. Not (necessarily) bc your doctor is selling your data, but bc 9 times out of 10, they are sending it to a 3rd party provider for processing. Thats how the tech works >

Saw Halestorm & Bloodywood last night! Bloodywood was great, so aggressively, intensely earnest & constantly concerned ppl look out for each other 🥺 Halestorm was also excellent; Lizzy Hale does the job of 5 people while alternating between screaming & singing like it's nothing; very impressive

6-yo nephew is going through occasional bursts of rage he's not quite mastered controlling yet, so my sister in law bought him four wobbly jelly monsters with a firm core that you can twist and contort and throw on the floor and generally just be horrible to, and honestly I was tempted to steal one

This fall has been a picture-book fall over here: great fall colors, crisp, sunny fall days, and lately there's been lots of creepy fog. Tried to capture some as I was taking the bin out and accidentally snapped a picture of what appears to be a ghostly tree horror stalking me from the bushes 😨

Emailed them to be like, 'uh, are you still sending thing?' & they replied 'it's with shipping', plus a tracking nr that told me it had been scanned for shipping that same day.

So I guess they just. Forgot? After sending me an aggressive email that also promised a replacement. Mixed signals, guys!
A bit ago, we received a damaged online shipment. I emailed "thing is broken, pls replace". They got offended & accused me of lying (incl faking photos, which, uh 😂) but did say they'd replace it (again, what).

Thing is, they haven't. No new thing yet. It's been weeks! I'm confounded 😔

I started reading Chain of Command just a few days ago so this #uspol death feels very relevant and timely 👌

Googling odd cat behaviour always gets you at least one article trying to explain how you can "fix" it. I don't want to fix it! I just want to know why the little creature does the thing 🤔

I wish I had succinct words to describe my feelings abt the rise of auto-translated digital interfaces. Nations (like Germany) with established bastardized-English interface terminology are confronted with unintuitive nonsense & barred from accessing the EN original in the name of personalised UX

Ad for mobile provider at the platform for infamously late DB trains. It shows a guy speaking into a phone while sitting on his suitcase, likely having had his travel plans derailed. The slogan says "always being able to let folks know you'll be late".

Gotta respect ad game when I see it 😂

For language fans: the Turkish word 'Alman' (='German') has become German slang for 'typically German' (not favourable). TIL that 'Almansplaining' refers to white Germans going around lecturing non-white people on how things are done in Germany. Excellent language development, no notes 😂

Whenever some online tech mag starts an article with "Has your mouse pointer disappeared? Fret not, here's five ways to fix it!" and then begins the next sentence with the word "Click", they should be visited by MS Clippy's angry older brother Choppy 😡

All I can think of when I hear "agentic" now are AI models trying to keep a vending machine stocked and wailing about how only crimes are occurring. Which, okay, I can see how that's broadly more reminiscent of men than women 🤔
“Men are still seen as more agentic than women, though ‘equal’ is on the rise” Alice Eagly, SESP Scientific Impact Award recipient.
