With 1 in 5 fish caught globally coming from #IUUfishing and with #RFMOs making piecemeal progress on catch documentation schemes, its time for more market state action. Here's how👇

The #EUOceanPact promises a new generation of Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreements (SFPAs) between the EU and partner countries.

🎣 The FAO Global Record is a key tool in the fight against illegal fishing, making transparent information on fishing fleets globally.

But most IUU Fishing Action Alliance members haven’t yet uploaded data.

Ahead of #UNOC3, we are calling for action.

🌊 This week, our campaigners are on the ground at the UN Ocean Conference #UNOC in Nice, France 🌊

Illegal fishing and human rights abuses are taking place across our ocean, while the people who profit from this destruction too often get off scot free.

Today, at “No Safe Harbour”, an event co-hosted by EJF at #UNOC3, senior ministers announced commitments to improve fisheries transparency and reveal the beneficial owners of fishing vessels 👏

This is a huge step towards ending illegal fishing and human rights abuses at sea.

Transparency is an essential foundation of effective fisheries management. So why haven’t most IUU Action Alliance members yet shared basic up-to-date vessel data? Ahead of #UNOC3, Oceana calls for real actionnot just words. #OceanGovernance #IUUFishing

Our new policy brief, "Beyond the Flag", finds that 62% of LSF vessels have no ownership info available—and 1/6 are owned in a different country to their flag.

📦 60% of global seafood is imported by the EU, US, Japan & South Korea - but they don’t all require the same traceability info.

🐠 We urge governments to close the gaps and align controls to keep illegal fishing out of supply chains.

📃 Principle 7 of CFT's Global Charter: bit.ly/4i1utJ5 emphasizes the need for mandatory, robust traceability systems to ensure seafood is legal & traceable from ‘boat to plate.’

This #OurOcean25, we're asking all countries to strengthen national traceability measures across their supply chains.

🎉This week, @europarl.europa.eu voted to improve transparency on the ownership of fishing vessels.

We are dedicated to unveiling the secrecy around this: our latest investigation uncovered 13 EU-owned vessels flagged to Guinea-Bissau, a rapidly expanding flag of convenience country.
