Six months after the #OceanPact, where the EU committed to tackle flags of convenience, we call on the
@ec.europa.eu and Commissioner Costas Kadis to act: publish the study on the impact of this practice and ensure that EU Member States monitor foreign ownership of fishing vessels.

One bottom trawl. That’s all it takes to destroy decades of deep-sea life. The Mediterranean’s unique deep ecosystems deserve real protection.

It’s time for @fao.org GFCM and @ec.europa.eu to extend the deep-sea trawl ban to at least 800m. It’s time to #DefendTheDeep.

Small-scale fishers are vital for coastal economies, but still left behind when quotas are allocated.

The #CommonFisheriesPolicy recognises them, but EU countries fail to ensure fair access.

On #WorldFisheriesDay, we stand with small-scale fishers & call for fair quotas 🎣

🌊 We’re taking action against #BottomTrawling in marine protected areas.

Last year, we joined forces with @clientearth.bsky.social to take Spain to court for failing to protect their seas, but still nothing has changed.

Our Executive Director @verampcoelho.bsky.social spoke at S&D's event on the future of the #CommonFisheriesPolicy at @europarl.europa.eu.

Our message: implement and enforce it. When applied, it delivers healthier stocks as well as better salaries, profits & more resilience for fishers.

NEW report shows most western Mediterranean trawlers are barely profitable due to overfishing & fleet overcapacity.

We call on 🇫🇷🇪🇸🇮🇹 to reduce the number of trawlers, rebuild fish populations, & support a transition to sustainable fishing. #WestMedMAP

#BottomTrawling not only destroys habitats in MPAs, it also fuels the #ClimateCrisis by resuspending seabed carbon. Yet European governments still subsidise it.

Ahead of #COP30, it’s time to end this destructive practice.

Last month, Spain announced the protection of five new marine protected areas.

One of these is the Mallorca Channel. It includes three seamounts and seabed habitats like bamboo coral forests, pockmarks and maërl beds. #INTEMARES

Governments can protect marine environments by supporting small-scale fishing
Nearly 30 per cent of the world’s population lives in coastal areas. A changing climate and biodiversity loss represent an unprecedented threat to these ecosystems.

In the Mediterranean, many fishing operators hide their vessels’ engine power from authorities.

This fraud sparks a vicious cycle: stronger engines → bigger nets → depleted stocks → fishers forced to increase capacity to stay competitive.

The EU’s #CommonFisheriesPolicy delivers results: where it’s implemented, fish stocks recover and overfishing drops.🐟

But progress isn’t complete yet. We need full and fair implementation across all EU seas, for people and for the planet. 🌍

Mediterranean countries have missed a crucial chance to protect #DeepSea life from destructive fishing.

The Mediterranean deep sea is a refuge for unique life and extending its protection would have minimal impact on fishers. Yet it remains under threat from destructive fishing.

We call on @ec.europa.eu, @fao.org GFCM and Med countries to extend #DeepSea protection.

Just copy-pasting the EU’s existing targets into the new #OceanAct would be fairly meaningless.

Ambitions like protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030—agreed by the EU but not yet in law—must be added.

Mediterranean deep-sea ecosystems shelter unique species, yet a single trawl pass can wipe them out in seconds.

IMO numbers play a key role in controlling vessels at sea and helping authorities to prevent illegal fishing.

We urge the @fao.org General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean to make this identification information compulsory for all vessels longer than 15 metres since currently it's not. ⬇️
