🌊 For the Oceans 🌊 Working to protect the ocean through efforts to #BanBottomTrawling #EndOverfishing #FightIllegalFishing

EU decision-makers are on a mission to roll back vital nature laws.

🚨 Across Europe we’re seeing fewer fish stocks, bycatch of endangered species, and declining marine habitats.

These laws need no fixing; they need enforcing. #HandsOffNature!

With proper monitoring, scientists can finally see what’s really being caught. including unexpected bycatch, and ensure fishing stays in balance with nature.

This is the kind of future-proof approach Europe should back. 🌊

🎥 Watch how on-board cameras give a full view of what happens on deck, from multiple angles and straight at the point where fish come in.

With transparency, fishers rethink gear, areas, and practices. When everything’s visible, discards drop.

🐟 Europe can’t afford to keep wasting fish at sea.

Highgrading is illegal, harmful to ecosystems, and unfair to honest fishers, yet it often goes unseen.

This waste puts huge pressure on marine ecosystems and with almost no risk of getting caught, the practice continues.🌊

🚨Oceana reports to authorities 50 concerning cases of Spanish fishing vessels for switching off their geolocation systems at sea. This practice is prohibited for European fishing vessels, unless there are safety risks, such as cases of piracy.

🦑 Did you know that the squid we eat can come from regions that are notorious for illegal fishing & human rights abuses?

Oceana's recent investigation shows that many squid products sold in the EU lack basic information such as species & origin.

Consumers deserve to know more:

EU citizens expect #MarineProtectedAreas to be protected from destructive fishing.

Six months after NGOs filed a legal complaint, we urge @ec.europa.eu to enforce the law and Commissioner Kadis to end destructive #BottomTrawling in MPAs via the #EUOceanPact.

🌊Marine protected areas aren’t always as “protected” as they sound.

Spain is still allowing destructive #BottomTrawling inside these sites, and that’s why we, together with @clienteartheur.bsky.social, are taking the Government to court. #ProtectedMeansProtected #30x30

Not all fish populations are recovering. Hake and others remain in poor shape despite progress.

We need stronger, science-based action: lower fishing mortality, better selectivity, and more effective MPAs to face climate change, biodiversity loss & invasive species.

NEW @fao.org GFCM report on the State of Mediterranean & Black Sea Fisheries is out.

#Overfishing is declining, from 87% in 2013 to 52% in 2023, the lowest in recent decades & biomass is up 25%. A sign that progress is real, but challenges remain.

We were at the @fao.org GFCM annual meeting urging stronger deep-sea protection in the Mediterranean. Pilot projects show the costs for fishers are minimal, yet countries missed a key chance to act.

The EU must lead & extend the trawl ban to at least 800m by 2026. #DefendTheDeep

NEW OCEANA STUDY: 🦑Half of the squid products analysed in Brussels & Milan lack basic consumer information.

🧬DNA tests show that many came from high-risk fisheries linked to illegal fishing & labour abuses.

We need clear labels on all seafood products. europe.oceana.org/reports/the-...

Six months after the #OceanPact, where the EU committed to tackle flags of convenience, we call on the
@ec.europa.eu and Commissioner Costas Kadis to act: publish the study on the impact of this practice and ensure that EU Member States monitor foreign ownership of fishing vessels.

One bottom trawl. That’s all it takes to destroy decades of deep-sea life. The Mediterranean’s unique deep ecosystems deserve real protection.

It’s time for @fao.org GFCM and @ec.europa.eu to extend the deep-sea trawl ban to at least 800m. It’s time to #DefendTheDeep.

Small-scale fishers are vital for coastal economies, but still left behind when quotas are allocated.

The #CommonFisheriesPolicy recognises them, but EU countries fail to ensure fair access.

On #WorldFisheriesDay, we stand with small-scale fishers & call for fair quotas 🎣

🌊 We’re taking action against #BottomTrawling in marine protected areas.

Last year, we joined forces with @clientearth.bsky.social to take Spain to court for failing to protect their seas, but still nothing has changed.

Our Executive Director @verampcoelho.bsky.social spoke at S&D's event on the future of the #CommonFisheriesPolicy at @europarl.europa.eu.

Our message: implement and enforce it. When applied, it delivers healthier stocks as well as better salaries, profits & more resilience for fishers.

NEW report shows most western Mediterranean trawlers are barely profitable due to overfishing & fleet overcapacity.

We call on 🇫🇷🇪🇸🇮🇹 to reduce the number of trawlers, rebuild fish populations, & support a transition to sustainable fishing. #WestMedMAP

For years, Oceana has campaigned for the protection of El Hierro’s rich, well-preserved ecosystems.

In the Mediterranean, many fishing operators hide their vessels’ engine power from authorities.

This fraud sparks a vicious cycle: stronger engines → bigger nets → depleted stocks → fishers forced to increase capacity to stay competitive.

The EU’s #CommonFisheriesPolicy delivers results: where it’s implemented, fish stocks recover and overfishing drops.🐟

But progress isn’t complete yet. We need full and fair implementation across all EU seas, for people and for the planet. 🌍

Mediterranean countries have missed a crucial chance to protect #DeepSea life from destructive fishing.
We urge them and @ec.europa.eu to show leadership & extend the #bottomtrawling ban to at least 800m in 2026— for marine life, fishers & the climate
