There a wave of senior retirements at my office and several of us looked around and then realized with dread “we’re the adults now.” 😳
the singular petrifying thought of my entire day... "I am the adult in the room"

@ffxnow.bsky.social did Fairfax County extend the personal
Property tax deadline again?

This is the only right answer.
Mamdani: "My message to ICE agents & to everyone across this city is that everyone will be held to the same standard of the law. If you violate it, you must be held accountable. There is sadly a sense growing that certain people are allowed to violate that law, whether they be POTUS or ICE agents."

So #FairfaxCounty VA, home to tens of 1000s of #federalemployees, says they cannot grant federal employees a grace period to pay our personal property tax bills. So we have to come up with hundreds of dollars when we’re not getting a paycheck. This seems incredibly dumb. #furlough #federalshutdown

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

Oh this just made me laugh.
at last a big budget film about Hong Xiuquan
That everything about the "2" here (the colour, the font, the fact that it's ever so slightly tilted) makes it look like a zany comedy sequel, is especially funny

Xi Jinping disappears from public view for several weeks every year (before Beidaihe, IIRC) and the speculation explodes that he’s dead/there’s been a coup, then it all ends in nothing. Just a random thought that has popped into my head this morning, for no reason at all.

A miracle, truly. I’m buying it just on principle.
Dan has done it. No red, no dragon, no Great Wall, nary a flag on the cover of a China book.
Saturday book mail: thanks to @wwnorton.com for an advance copy of BREAKNECK: CHINA'S QUEST TO ENGINEER THE FUTURE, by Dan Wang. It immediately went into my vacation reading tote bag.

Truth.
Your regular reminder that no tax cut in the history of tax cuts has ever paid for itself.
TAPPER: The tax cuts during the first Trump term didn't pay for themselves

BESSENT: Well, we also had something called covid

TAPPER: This is separate from that though
