It’s also stupid easy to radicalise people who can see their future becoming less bright. The reunification of Germany was a good thing, it also was brutal for every one in east Germany. Women got laid off, day cares closed, factories shut down, west Germans moved to save money, the youth moved out.

in Germany a lot of this was a reaction to the war years and the failed promises of German imperialism, but you see similar dynamics all over. Fascism's greatest supporters are mediocre people born in comfort who need someone to blame for the fact that they don't have more.
