As faith leaders, we are haunted by the stories of those detained at the Broadview ICE facility, by the brutality of ICE agents on our streets, and by the fear of those too scared to leave their homes. We are outraged. We cannot remain silent. Today, faith leaders, congregants, and neighbors gathered at the Broadview ICE facility to say what our hearts already know: God demands freedom. We delivered a letter signed by 270 religious leaders asking that those detained be allowed to receive religious rites and pastoral care. We held up telephones, pillows, toothpaste, water—all items that have been withheld from detainees in Broadview. Then, led by our feet in prayer, we linked arms and began to process toward the ICE facility to deliver pastoral care to our neighbors. We were met with overwhelming and unnecessary violence at the hands of multiple police forces (Broadview Police Department, Illinois State Police, Cook County Sheriff's Office, & Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System). They knelt on our necks. They pulled, dragged, and slammed us to the ground. Today, police brutalized faith leaders for offering spiritual care to their stolen neighbors. Despite law enforcement's staggering aggression, we were persistently nonviolent. The video evidence supports this. We remain steadfast in our demands for freedom: We demand the immediate release of those detained. We demand an end to regional ICE activity. We demand human dignity for all people, without exception. We demand the right to offer spiritual care to those detained — because even in confinement, every person deserves compassion, prayer, and presence. God does not bless cages. God does not sanction abductions. God demands freedom.

It's unfair to the party out of power, and it's downright murderous to our democracy in the long term, as we are seeing. We need gerrymandering outlawed nation-wide, and districting put in the hands of non-partisan independent commissions with the goal of fair representation.
