I had the chance to ask one of my Senators this in a small group meeting and he thought it was a completely unfair question (we had to send qs in advance) and would not even consider answering it. It seems like a solid thing to ask any Rep or Senator, always but especially now.

Completely. Endorsing one set of policies indicates some strong (and negative) moral character traits. Totally reasonable for folks to not want to tolerate their intolerance. Not all politics are the same.
