Thankful for “high” (for me) energy days that allow me to make good progress on critical home improvement projects like fixing the water damage to our front door. Also for hobbit-proportioned power tools (yaay oscillating saw!)!

Benefits to waking up before the damn sun: seeing four (4!!) planets and the full moon in the sky. (Details in the alt text!)

If this happens again tomorrow, I’m hauling the telescope out!!
Jupiter (smaller bright dot just left and below center frame) and Venus (larger and brighter dot just right and above center of frame) in a pale, pale blue patch of morning sky between power lines and dark, silhouetted trees. A bright, pale yellow full moon ringed by an aura in the same shade peeks over dark, silhouetted trees and the roof of a house in a pale cobalt sky. Saturn (a paler dot in a pale cobalt sky) and Neptune (ok not actually visible but NightSky says it’s there!!) in the center of the frame with no other features, due to the camera having been zoomed in. The pale sot is noticeably round (even moreso if you zoom in on it), but no rings are visible.

Skipping interfacing: 0 hours.
Learning my lesson by unpicking teeny, tiny stitches from loosely woven fabrics that should have been interfaced and threatened to unravel in protest: 2+ hours.
Correcting the error of my ways by partially underlining with silk organza: Priceless.

This is the outside side of our window fan filter after 5 days of cleaning wildfire smoke particulates and other Tiny But Horrifying Things from our indoor air. 🤢
Outside side of 20” box fan. The white cardboard edges of the MERV-13 air filter contrast sharply with a circle of brown-ish / gray-ish / black-ish discoloration where the filter caught the “Bad (Air) Guys”.

Example 3: two separate square fans that are actually NOT attached to the filter (set up details in the alt text). This lowered the AQI from 067 to 002 in about 20 minutes! 🤩
Two separate 12” square fans sit in a window with the sash pulled down to hold them in place. Behind the fans — but NOT attached to them — is a 14”x24” MERV-13 HVAC air filter. The filter has cardboard taped to each side that block off air from coming in around the filter. An old king sized pillowcase is folded several times and taped to the top of the filter to block outside air.

Example 2: a twin window fan and similar size filter (details in alt text). AQI went from mid ti high 060s (which is where it starts to bother me) to 002 currently. 🥳
A 12”x22”-28” twin window fan with a 12”x24” MERV-13 HVAC air filter taped to its outside side. One side of the fan has its accordion extension pulled out to block the rest of the window opening. An old pillowcase is stuffed into the cracks around the opposite side and along the top of the fan. The window curtain is stuffed into cracks along the top on the accordion side.

Example 1: a 20” box fan with matching filter (details in alt text). It’s not sealed super well, but it still lowered the AQI in the from from ~075 to ~008 at the moment. 🤓

There are bits of light showing thru here and there. The outside side of the box fan has a 20”x20” MERV-13 HVAC air filter taped to it. You can faintly see some discoloration of the filter thru the fan.

PSA: If you have shitty lungs like I do and no central HVAC with a HEPA filter to mitigate wildfire smoke or other pollutants making the outside air dangerous to breathe on high AQI days, a MERV-13 (or higher) filter taped to a window fan works REALLY well.
