While Disney said its decision to return Kimmel to the air came after “having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy,” millions of subscribers canceling in protest undoubtedly weighed on executives’ minds. Showing once again that caving to Trump comes at a steep cost
The first look at the scale of Disney backlash after it suspended Kimmel. Wow>>

“Antenna estimated a total of 3 million cancellations for Disney+ and 4.1 million for Hulu in September. Both of those figures far exceeded the trailing three-month averages for the services”

China has reason to call Trump’s bluff on tariffs.

“.. exports from the world's second-largest economy have grown 7.1% to 19.95 trillion yuan ($2.80 trillion) in the first nine months of this year, despite a significant drop in goods heading to the United States.”

I will never forget the dread & horror I felt that day, living in Cairo and seeing Egypt's military had massacred peaceful Coptic Christian protestors by firing on them & trampling them with armored vehicles. The mangled bodies were horrifying, as was the sectarian incitement that followed 🧵
NEW: Fourteen years ago, Egyptian security forces killed 28 and injured hundreds, most of them Copts, in front of the Maspero building. In this piece, Amy Fallas revisits the Maspero Massacre, the refusal to acknowledge the past, and the injustices that persist.

It's unclear from this article if this aid is meant to run through the GHF which has been killing Palestinians at aid centers on a daily basis by deliberately firing into crowds that pose no threat to soldiers. This came from testimony from both Palestinians and Israeli soldiers themselves.

Harrowing update on the seemingly endless stream of atrocities being uncovered around Saydnaya and the Assad regime. The challenges that Syria faces today are real and substantial, but the world is a better place now that this regime has been toppled.
Since December we have been investigating the Assad regime's killings in Saydnaya prison.

Based on interviews with 21 former detainees, we show the extent of the atrocities committed in the prison, including an incident in March 2023 in which some 600 men were executed in one week:

Under the Assad regime, Saydnaya prison became a mass-killing machine; ‘a symbol of shame for the whole world.’

Here in North Carolina, we have a statute, section 15a-401 of the NC Code, that requires police officers to identify themselves when making an arrest or during the functional equivalent of an arrest. There's no equivalent federal law, but there needs to be. Might be something for Democrats to push.

Then ICE showed up at his home in Spokane: no warrant, no ID

Unfortunately few people have ever wanted to pay for hard news and investigations, which have always been subsidized by ads, cartoons, crosswords, Wordle, recipe apps, paid events, etc., and can mostly only be undertaken by newsrooms. Readers of indy Substacks are paying for takes
It's crazy how much independent life does not incentivize reporting. I spent 2 days working on a piece about Meta censoring the biggest Muslim news acct in India, digging into Meta's relationship w/ India's far right BJP party & I lost paid subscribers. Meaning I lost hundreds of $ doing this story
