“y’all…growth ain’t enough”
Texas has had higher GDP growth and a lower unemployment rate than most states since the pandemic.

But it is also the state with “the most people in financial distress.” This ranking came as a surprise to a lot of people — but not to Texas native @kedseconomist.com 🎥

For all the folks new to bsky, check out this project I’m working on.

At this point, it’s just me and a little bit of advice/input from family. If this sounds interesting to you and you’d like to contribute to any aspect of an online publication, hit me up in the DMs.
We are hoping to do a soft launch sometime in Q1 of 2025.

In our first issue, we’d like to invite people to submit an essay addressing the question:

“What is Texas?”

Who would you like to hear from?

What notable Texans should we reach out to?

Feel free to submit your own essay!

We will be sad to see Jen leave Houston and the Lone Star State…she has been a true friend to all Texans with her excellent reporting over the years. Best of luck, Jen!
some news: i'm leaving the chronicle. i have absolutely loved being part of the houston community (both online and IRL) and getting to know many of the people who care about this place as much as i do. 🧵

Here's a map of the 10 ecological regions that make up Texas overlaid on a map of the counties of Texas. It's interesting to see the county where you live or where you grew up and which region it's in. I grew up in Bell County, right on the line between the Cross Timbers and the Blackland Prairie.

For the record:

Tejas Quarterly is as of yet still more of an idea than a concrete publication, but even we recognize how important it is for any publication, young or old, to stand for truth and justice. In this election, the only ethical choice is a vote for Harris/Walz.

One image of Texas is that of an oil and gas state. This is an image widely known and promoted by leaders of the state.

But Texas is also a significant wind energy state, an image much less recognized and perhaps at odds with the oil and gas image.
Today I learned that there are several US states that don't have ANY onshore wind farms. I think many Europeans take for granted the role that wind farms play in our energy systems.

With a judge blocking the execution of Mr Roberson for now in response to a subpoena from House Republicans in the #txlege, we will soon see whether Attorney General Ken Paxton values justice over executing a man in a very pro-death penalty state.

The roles/responsibilities of Texas sheriffs have changed dramatically over time, especially for sheriffs in large urban counties. It is a far more professional and administrative position now than in the days of cattle rustling and dueling gunfighters.
Bolts learned that the sheriff of Fort Worth is flouting the state law that requires investigations into deaths under his custody.

And that this is happening while jails shockingly surge under his tenure. boltsmag.org/jail-crisis-...

All of his appeals have failed. His conviction involves discredited science, and the lead investigator says “there is no evidence of a crime, much less a capital crime.” The U.S. Supreme Court — and Gov. Greg Abbott — are running out of time to save him.
Short of a Miracle, Robert Roberson Will Die in Hours. Legislators Are Trying to Stop It. - The Barbed Wire

A rather stunning development that runs counter to the idea of what it means to be a pro-life Republican in Texas.

What does justice mean in Texas? What does it mean to be pro-life in Texas?
