After a re-watch of House Of 1000 Corpses (2003) at the weekend, I went off on a Rob Zombie theme (ignore The Mummy (2017)).

Watching a House Of triple back to back gave me a massive appreciation for 3 From Hell (2019) that I didn’t have when I first watched it.

This week has been horror films of my youth. Honestly, most held up to the enjoyment levels I remember.

Saw (2004) remains pretty damn brilliant. The screaming at the end still chilled me to my bones. But I take it personally that it’s over 20 years old…

My 300th horror film of the year and 200th classic film of the year was the resplendent The Masquerade Of The Red Death (1964). Delighted to give this honour to the equally glorious Vincent Price.

Winner of the week: the Arrow release of The City Of The Dead (1960) - free to view on YouTube.

Stellar Amicus-adjacent work from Milton Subotsky with nuanced use repetition to enhance the tale.

The image of Barlow holding the giant cross aloft was haunting af.

Halloween means spooky marathons, so working my way through rewatches of Fear Street and Hell House LLC.

Tonight is Fear Street: 1666 (2021), Hell House LLC: Origins (2023), and Hell House LLC: Lineage (2025).

Happy Halloween spooky chums!

The Collector (1965), utterly brilliant. So close to perfection. So, so close.

The Mothman Prophecies (2002) and, in particular, Gothika (2003), not as good as I remember. Twenty years sure does change taste.

Clusters of ringless honey mushrooms sprouting up everywhere and so my yearly shroom-watch begins.

Afternoon-shrooms and pre-sunrise-shrooms.

Scratched the itch of rewatching The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). It gets better every time and I hate the sound of chainsaws more every time too.

Hard recommend for From A Whisper To A Scream (1987). Amicus-vibing portmanteau with 80s slasher violence. Fab!

So I put on Witchboard 2 (1993) expecting a crappy sequel, but turns out it’s as ridiculously great as the first one? What?! 🤣

I’ve never seen a sequel be so lore-perfect to the original.

I’m now so excited to watch Witchboard 3 (1995) as it’s once again written by Kevin Tenney. What a ride 🤣

Last four are top and tailed by two excellent films I’d known nothing about. Gothic tales courtesy of Vincent Price and outrageously perfect 80s schlock courtesy of a ouija board.

Tonight’s evening watch will be Witchboard 2 and I can’t wait! 👻

A pretty fantastic last four. The Hearse (1980) was the only new watch (would’ve been 3.5, but the ending was a bit limp).

Highlight was, naturally, The Curse Of Frankenstein (1957) on the big screen in its 4K glory. Can’t get much better than that.

Braved a night out on a school night and to the 4K premiere of The Curse Of Frankenstein in London. It was *chef’s kiss*

A big shout out to the two lovely chaps who kept my daughter and I company while waiting for the doors to open. Wonderful to chat classic films while out in the wild.

Everyone should watch The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane (1976) and Capricorn One (1977).

Very different films (naturally!), but both the epitome of kickass 70s thrillers.

Epic atmosphere, epic actors, epic storytelling. Yes, yes, yes!

Another super successful viewing week.

I went into Caddo Lake (2024) expecting a standard detective drama I could doomscroll to, but no, it was actually an incredible sci-fi mystery that made me tear up?!

Watched the whole thing without looking at my phone!

Sunday afternoon viewing of Peeping Tom (1960) and accidentally paused on this wonderful shot of Anna Massey.

Kind of apt, I think.

I don’t know wtf I was dreaming about last night, but I woke up this morning lying in a full on Peter Pan pose?

Another Hammer down and another Stephen King adaption I really should have seen by now. Very impressed by both.

The surprise was 1956’s revenge thriller The Killer Is Loose. It was far more absorbing than expected.

Spotted Mission To Mars (2000) on tv for a trashy, fun rewatch and got excited.

Turns out I was a dolt. It was, in fact, very bad tv movie Escape From Mars (1999).

Even worse, I sat through the whole thing…?!

Very guilty of being on my phone while watching a film this week.

I need to revisit The Discovery (2017) as I was more listening than watching.
I'm 100% sure I missed nuances, and rating it 3.5 based on mostly what I heard means it deserved more of my attention.
